Brandl | 2 Brandl | 2 Ryan Brandl Dr. Wert English 112 January 28, 2021 Junk Food and Obesity The abuse of junk food in America has contributed greatly to the national obesity epidemic. However, I do not think that Americans are becoming overweight by eating junk food alone. I believe the lack of physical activity also contributes to the obesity epidemic. In an article written by Patricia M. Anderson and Kristin F. Butcher it states, “children today seem less likely to walk to school and to be traveling more in cars than they were during the early 1970s, perhaps because of changes in the built environment. Finally, children spend more time viewing television and using computers. Anderson and Butcher find no one factor that has led to increases in children's obesity” (Anderson & Butcher - pp. 19–45). I do believe that the fast-food industry is to blame for the increase in children’s obesity. The fast-food industry markets towards children. As stated in “Don’t Blame the Eater” by David Zinczenko, “Fast food companies are marketing to children a product with proven health hazards and no warning labels” (Zinczenko, pg. 649) Works Cited Anderson, Patricia M., and Kristin F. Butcher. “Childhood Obesity: Trends and Potential Causes.” The Future of Children, vol. 16, no. 1, 2006, pp. 19–45. JSTOR, www.jstor.org/stable/3556549. Accessed 19 Feb. 2021.
