Comparatively, Zambia is slightly larger than Texas. The terrain is high plateau with some hills and mountains. The climate of Zambia is tropical, the degree of which is modified by altitude. The country experiences a rainy season from October to April. Current environmental issues include air pollution and resulting acid rain in the mineral extraction and refining region; chemical runoff into watersheds; poaching; deforestation; soil erosion; desertification; lack of adequate water treatment presents human health risks. Population Characteristics The population of Zambia is in excess of 15 million with a median age group of 16-17 for both males and females. The mortality rate in Zambia is in the highest top 25 countries in the world, ranking 7th in the world for HIV related deaths. Despite strong economic growth and its status as a lower middle-income country, widespread and extreme rural poverty and high unemployment levels remain significant problems. Economy Zambians derive their income from construction, foodstuffs, beverages, chemicals, textiles, fertilizer, horticulture, and farming. Products from farming include corn, sorghum, rice, peanuts, sunflower seeds, vegetables, flowers, tobacco, cotton, sugarcane, cassava (manioc, tapioca), and coffee. Farms also produce cattle, goats, pigs, poultry, milk, and eggs. Income is also from mining and processing of copper and emerald mining, Natural resources in Zambia include cobalt, zinc, lead, coal, gold, silver, and uranium. Economic policy inconsistency and poor budget execution in recent years has hindered the economy and contributed to weakness in the kwacha, which was Africa’s worst performing currency during 2014. Technology Out of the 219 countries, Zambia ranks 92nd in electricity production. Hydroelectricity accounts for over 99% of the country’s energy resources. There is little to no energy from other sources such as nuclear, other renewable sources, crude oil, or natural gas. The Zambian transportation system includes access to airports, pipelines, railways, roadways, waterways and a river port. However the CIA Factbook does not indicate how many individuals have access to transportation systems and the major mode of transportation (facilitated or on foot) that those in lower economic status travel, nor how far they must travel for support services in health, water acquisition, employment, and the like. The communications systems is among the best in sub-Saharan Africa and Internet service is widely available. One hundred ten million Zambians are connected; however, this leaves over 5 million unconnected. While it appears communication systems are adequate, with over 70 languages being spoken in the country,
