You should adopt the mindset of a business strategist for the organisation you have elected to base your report on. Your business strategy report must be presented using an academic report format. It should conform to the format set out below, and should also include a professionally laid-out Table of Contents prior to the Executive Summary. Students will work in groups of three for this assignment. Strategy is rarely carried out in organisations by individuals working in isolation. This assignment is designed to prepare you for the realities of carrying out strategy beyond your university studies. Your local lecturer will advise on arrangements for forming groups early in the session. Reports must be submitted electronically via the MySCU HOTL3001 Blackboard site by the due date. Length is 3000 words maximum (excluding Executive Summary, reference list and any appendices). For the purpose of this analysis, your group is to choose one of the following two case organisations to analyse in your report. The two available organisations are: Apple (an American multinational technology company) OR Aldi (a German supermarket chain). Format Executive Summary An Executive Summary of a report is just that, a summary (and is not included in your total word count for this assessment). It contains a statement of report purpose and an overview of the actual and specific findings – so it summaries the entire report; it does not just act as a longer introduction. For this assessment, it should be no longer than one page. The summary can only be written after you have completed your report. Write in ‘past’ tense (e.g. The purpose of this report was to…). If an Executive Summary is well written the reader should be able to understand the main points, findings, and conclusions of the actual report without having to read the full report. Section One – Introduction (approx. 100 words) This is a brief statement of the purpose of the report, what its objectives are, and an overview of how the report is structured. Section Two – Analysis of the Internal Environment (900 words) In this section you are required to critically analyse the organisation’s internal environment. You should critically evaluate the organisation’s resources, competences, and strategic capabilities (ie. distinctive competencies), and how these contribute to that organisation’s competitive advantage. In compiling this section you must: • Critically discuss the organisation’s key resources, competences, and how those resources and competences combine to form strategic capabilities. www.scu.edu.au Lismore Coffs Harbour Gold Coast PO Box 157, Lismore NSW 2480 Australia Hogbin Drive, Coffs Harbour NSW 2450 Australia Locked Mail Bag 4, Coolangatta QLD 4225 Australia T +61 2 6620 3000 F +61 2 6620 3700 T +61 2 6659 3777 T +61 7 5589 3000 F +61 7 5589 3700 CRICOS Provider 01241G • You should also briefly discuss what you believe is the organisation’s key competitive advantage, and comment on its durability. • Incorporate and discuss at least two (2) relevant literature references into your analysis to demonstrate wider reading on the organisation you are analysing. It is strongly suggested that you address each concept (i.e. resources, competences, strategic capabilities, competitive advantage) separately. Use sub-headings. Remember that the marker is looking for you to demonstrate an understanding of each concept. Section Three – Analysis of the External Environment (1100 words) Here you are required to analyse the organisation’s external environments. There are two components to this section: an analysis of the macro-environment, and an analysis of the industry environment. 3.1 Analysis of the macro-environment In compiling your analysis of the organisation’s macro-environment you must: • Analyse two (2) contemporary macro-environmental trends pertinent to your case study organisation. Critically analyse how and why each trend could affect your organisation positively or negatively (Note: do not address more than two trends. We want you to address two trends in depth) • Incorporate at least two (2) literature references into your macro-environmental analysis to demonstrate wider reading on such issues. 3.2 Analysis of the industry environment In compiling your discussion on the organisation’s industry environment you must: • Analyse the organisation’s industry environment using Michael Porter’s Five Forces of industry competitiveness model (refer to Topic 5) to frame your analysis • Address all five elements of Porter’s Five Forces model • Incorporate and discuss at least two (2) literature references into your industry environment analysis to demonstrate wider reading on such issues. Again, it is suggested that you present a separate analysis of each of the five forces. You should also present a brief summary regarding the broader implications of your five forces analysis. Section Four – Recommended Strategic Direction (800 words) The purpose of this section is for you to make recommendations regarding

Introduction
ALDI is a German cheap chain of supermarkets founded by two siblings, Karl and Theo Albrecht, in the year 1960. Two br
others have grown this retail shop network into one of the world's largest food merchants, with over 7,000 locations worldwide. Due to differing perspectives on how to grow the business, ALDI has been divided into two portions, southern and northern, and both Karl and Theo are in charge of the two divisions. Northern Germany, France, Denmark, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands now have ALDI shops. The United States of America, Austria, Australia, Ireland, the Great Britain, and South Germany are all part of ALDI South. ALDI's domestic market presence has grown to the point where they currently have forty-two thousand outlets spread across participating states in Germany and a net of three thousand regions across the globe.
Analysis of the Internal Environment
The internal environment of ALDI has a tremendous impact on their industry progress. The organization's corporate culture is a crucial aspect in determining and analyzing whether it has the resources and competencies to carry out its operations. When a business seeks to achieve competitive advantage with its supply chain, it must outperform the competition in each of the value chain's operations. ALDI is a classic hard discounter since its competitive advantage is its cost leadership approach. ALDI is concentrating on generating value for its consumers through its value chain by enhancing product quality and lowering costs in all primary and secondary value chain operations. ALDI's product variety is relatively narrow, making the value chain highly flexible.
In the year 2001, ALDI South opened its first store in Australia. ALDI was able to grow to Victoria, Queensland, and New South Wales after the activities went successfully, and the company today has over 300 outlets in these states. As a result of its success, ALDI aims to extend its Australian business even further and build other outlets in other Australian areas. What factors contributed to ALDI's massive success in Australia? How can ALDI keep its lead against opponents such as Foodland Affiliated, Coles-Myer Group, and Woolworths? The strategic competence of ALDI, the internal environment, and the tactics that ALDI has utilised to date to achieve its success will be discussed in the following section (Skelton, 2018). And, based on...
