Blog How to stay sane during quarantine ( insert. Relevent picture) What an interesting time it is for us all isn’t it? We go from living our normal day to day life, then BOOM, life changes in the blink of an eye. Shopping stores are closed, sit-down restaurants are restricted, parks are closed, millions of people have lost their jobs, and people are feeling more and more impatient while feeling trapped in their homes. It can seem overwhelming, and at times you may want to pound your head on the wall. It’s imperative, especially in times like these where we focus on our well-being, as well as the well-being of the ones we love. So, before you start pounding your heads on the wall, least try a few of these suggestions to keep sane until this pass. Breath Simple I know but taking a few minutes to practice deep breathing has been shown to improve blood flow, release of toxins, and provides sense of calmness and peace just to name a few. Try it at least once or twice day. Step 1: get comfortable, either on a chair, your bed or the floor, or lay down on your back Step 2: breath in slowly through your nose, holding it in for 3-5 seconds Step 3. Release the air through you mouth slowly. Continue this for a few minutes a day, I promise you won’t regret it. Sunlight Go outside every day for a few minutes, especially when its sunny. I don’t care if you live on a farm, or your live in the 75th floor of a skyscraper, walk outside and get some sun. If you physically can’t walk outside, open your window and sit by. If you have a patio, or balcony, sit there for a few minutes. Getting sunlight provides vitamin D, which is crucial, (yes you can get vitamin D vitamins, but it’s not the same). Sunlight will brighten your mood, increase energy and increased cognition. It’s important for our overall health. Do this every day. Declutter Yes, this means donate and throw away things you no longer need or have excess of. Its’s perfect timing for Spring cleaning. You have clothes you have worn for months or years? Throw it out. You have 50 pots and pans in your kitchen? Throw it out. You have a living room with 4 sofas and 2 chairs for a family of 3? D E C L U T T E R. Your fridge looking a little messy? Empty it out, deep clean and sanitize, and put back the food that is being eaten and used, stop holding on to that casserole from 2 weeks ago. There is a certain freeing feeling when finally letting things go, try it. Having a clean, organized place can help you feel less anxious and make you happier. Who want to be quarantines in a dirty cluttered house? If you need ideas to organize, there are hundreds on YouTube. Keep in Touch Yes, we are required to stay in, but we are not required to stop talking to our friends and family. Human interaction is another crucial aspect of human nature. It can get quite depressing to go long periods of time with no one to talk to. You may be ok, but what about your mom? What about your dad in the nursing home? What about Agnes, the 80-year-old grandma who lives across the street and brings you a pie every holiday? What about your friend that’s been distant? wouldn’t this be the best time to reach out? It’s the best time build the relationships with the people in your life. Don’t wait, do it. Keep your mind occupied Pick up a book and start reading it, the best thing you can do it feed your brain. Have you been thinking about a business but never had the time or motivation? Start on it now. Have you wanted to start a garden? Start now. Have you wanted to learn how to sew? Start now. All we have right now is TIME. Use that time wisely, because Netflix will always be here, Instagram will always be here, you don’t need more than 8-9 hours of sleep. You will look back and regret not using this time to work on your goals and dreams. DO IT! Practice these steps every day. Remember, practice social distancing, don’t go out in public unless necessary, and even then, make sure you are taking the necessary steps to be covered. We will get through this. My family moved to the USA in 1996 as refugees, in search for a better life. After moving around from state to state, it seems as though we settled on Nebraska. I graduated from the university of Nebraska with undergraduate in psychology. I have over 7 years in banking as well, working in several different positions before leaving to concentrate on my education. I have applied for graduate school to study counseling, so fingers crossed I get accepted. My ultimate goal is to become a psychologist; however, I am taking things one at a time. My hobbies include binge watching my favorite tv shows, shopping, occasionally cooking, I say occasionally because I make a huge mess and my food is only good 50 percent of the time. I love my family and would do anything for them. I come from a family of 8, my lovely parent and 3 very protective brothers and 2 sisters I consider my thirds (get it? There’s three of us). Ha-ha. I’m a sucker for good tv and good food, so if you have any suggestions, please share. With love and respect, Dee
