You will be required to prepare an essay covering the following areas listed below: • Background of the leader ( relevant to their current role eg education/work history) • Explain what skills and competencies have contributed to their success • How would you describe his/her management/leadership “style”? Give details/examples. • Identify two key challenges they have faced and assess how they dealt with the situation • What have you learnt about management and leadership from studying them? The essay needs to have a clear and coherent structure, be clearly expressed, with few errors. In your essay refer to at least eight (8) references, at least five (5) of which need to be current academic references no older than 2010. An academic reference is a journal article or academic book. It is likely you will also have references from websites and news media about the leader Essays must be submitted via the Turnitin link on Moodle by the due date. Late submissions will lose 5% per day up until day 5. After this a zero mark will be awarded. Essays must be submitted in Microsoft Word using the Harvard referencing system. ck Ma is born in Hangzhou, China. He is the founder of the one of the biggest e commerce website, AliBaba; he was also stakeholder of Alipay. The company Alipay is its sister company that provides an e commerce payment portal. He was one of the richest man of Asia with net worth of $25 million. Ma Yun is the real name of Jack Ma. He is one of the greatest example self-made business owner. Who has very humble beginning? His sibling includes one elder brother and younger sister. Jack Ma and his siblings were raised in the communist china times and its isolation from western region. From the early life, Jack Ma wants to learn English.
He spent his morning riding on the bicycle, giving free English tuitions to foreign students. Jack did graduation in Bachelor’s degree in English. Before, he could have received degree in English; he already secured a job as an English teacher, earning $12 a month. In his childhood education background, as mentioned by Hariati, Pulungan and Husein (2020), Jack Ma failed in his primary school examination and that is not once but twice. His story as a failure has not stopped here only, he failed thrice in middle school and when applying to the university before finally joining Hangzhou Normal University.
He even applied for Harvard University and failed 10 times. He continuously wrote letters for the university and were rejected every time. This is the only education he got in his life. After the bachelor degree, he tried multiple jobs; he failed around in 30 interviews. He always go ahead, overcoming the pain of rejection and treat it as an opportunity for future growth. In 1995, Jack Ma visited United States for a government project, it is that time, Jack Ma introduced with computers and internet world. At that time, computers were very rare in china or if available, it is of very high cost. The internet and e-mails were not to existence.
Skills and Competencies Contributing to Success
The first startup of Jack Ma was China Yellow Page not AliBaba. That helped the Jack Ma building the online page and maintained the global customer reach. Jack Ma’s partner at that time includes his friends, colleagues and students. Some of them had been following Jack Ma to work in Beijing after a government-funded company and later going back to Hangzhou with Jack Ma to start up again acquired the China Yellow Page. They were the 18 founders of AliBaba. Jack Ma believes that there is great importance of leadership to run any business. He talks about the attitude.
He has a strong sense of character, which helped him to build strong foundation and loyalty on which AliBaba group grows. He sees through the eyes of the customer.
