The Financial Hurdles of International Students in Australia
Executive Summary
This research paper discusses and analyzes a very important aspect of diaspora in Australia. The international students in Australia, who went there to get an attractive degree, a good job and earn more money than their native land, face a number of crises when in the foreign land. One of the most important of these crises is the financial crisis which they face as Australia is an expensive country. This paper goes on to discuss the different reasons which pose problems for the international students when it comes to getting jobs. These
problems can be cultural, racial or because of the strict laws of the government. We have also studied how these students cope with the extreme expenses of living in a foreign nation, without any support.
1. Introduction
Internationalization of the Australian education system has been happening for a long time. Internationalization refers to the conversion of a significant percentage of the student population into young kids who do not belong natively to the country (Harman, 2009). In the case of Australia, the primary internationalization has come from China and India, the two highest populated developing Asian nations (Australian Dept. of Education, 2019). Like in common knowledge, the culture, food and traditions of these countries are very different from that of Australia. Religious practices, languages are some very crucial barriers which these student s face when they come to Australia with big dreams to be successful in their careers.
Apart from these, one major hurdle which these students face is the financial hurdle, which cannot be adjusted or removed under any circumstances. Australia has become a top center for higher education in the past few years, and student are coming in from all across the globe. Among the top 5 countries are China, India, Nepal, Brazil and Vietnam. But education does not come cheap in this country, and almost all these countries have currencies much lesser in value than the Australian dollar. So, although the students manage to enter the country for education, most do not end up with a hefty scholarship. Mostly without the support of parents, they are left all by themselves to fend to their financial needs for tuition fees, food, lodging and other amenities. Some researchers identified three main factors where international students faced immense difference from their homelands which were- culture, education and finance (Townsend, 2008). Keeping this in mind, most of these students resolve to petty part-time jobs for sustaining themselves and their tuition fees. Although working may ultimately help them pay for their tuitions, it also takes away precious student time from their careers. They miss out on student activities, extra courses and fun time too, all necessary for a fulfilling experience of college life. During the course of the essay, we will discuss how these students have faced the hardship in hope of building their career in a better and brighter way.
2. Analyses of the research questions
a. What are the problems faced by international students when looking for the appropriate job in Australia?
One of the biggest problems a university student faces when looking for a job in Australia are the rules and regulations mandated by the Australian Government, which has been discussed broadly, later on. But, apart from that some of the major difficulties for Asians in Australia are not being fluent in the language, low trustworthiness and giving more opportunities to the native students. Its an irony that although international students pay almost 400% more fees than their native counterparts, only around 35% of Australian companies are willing to recruit international students while pursuing their graduation or post-graduation (City of Sydney, 2016). According to Geyde, 2007, students face a big gap between their expectations of their degrees and the reality in the world.
Also, universities generally do not promote the idea of working while pursuing the degree, which make it even more difficult for students to work amidst the immense pressure and stress of education and homework. From a study conducted in Sydney city related to working international students, it was observed only 8% come to the country on scholarship, while around 41% work part-time and 35% depend on their family members working odds in the city (City of Sydney, 2016). This proves the graveness of the situation where not getting a job for oneself or one’s family member can actually end up in them having to leave their courses, where the government clearly states that they will not provide extra concessions, apart from the individual University grants or scholarships.
(Yang, 2016) describes vividly, being a student himself, how difficult it is for Asians, particularly Chinese to actually follow and apprehend Australian English, and most fail in spite of making through English language tests like ToEFL or IELTS. This is a major reason why they fail to get jobs in Australia as well. Sometimes because of this, students go through a “learning shock”, which is represented by deep frustrations, depression bouts over not being able to understand the language in spite of being trained in it.
Another important reason for being out of options and not being able to get a proper job is dependent on social isolation from the host national students. Deeply embedded in financial problems, these students find it a situation of face-loss to discuss problems with their classmates who are Australian natives and thus end up on losing important opportunities due to limited information. Guilt and shame ridden students do not usually open up about their issues and thus fail to get additional support and help from their fellow mates.
b. How are the international students able to manage the huge express regardless of the limited working hours?
When international students land in Australia and realize, how they have to pay for, most of them are at their wit’s end as to how to manage so much of money for sustenance. The primary expenses for a student are tuition fees, food, lodging and other miscellaneous expenses...
