Introduction and Theory:
In several properties of soil, Coefficient of permeability is a vital one and it can be determined in laboratory by performing
constant head permeability test and falling head permeability test. The rate of flow of water through a soil sample of gross cross section area A, can be written as q=k.i.A, where q is flow in unit time, k is coefficient of permeability and i is the hydraulic gradient. In constant head approach, water flows under a given constant head or hydraulic gradient through a soil sample of known length and cross sectional area in a given time. On the other hand, falling head test is carried out under varying head and this approach is useful when permeability is too small to enable accurate measurement of discharge by using a constant head permeameter. The objective of performing constant and falling head permeability test are to be familiar with these two procedures of evaluating coefficient of permeability in laboratory.
Procedure:
Constant head permeability test:
Prior to performing the test we have to prepare the specimen which was discussed below.
In the first step, weight of plastic specimen tube, porous stones, spring, and two rubber stoppers (W1) were taken. The bottom porous stone was slipped into the specimen tube and the bottom rubber stopper was fixed to the specimen tube. Next, oven dry sand was collected in a container. Using a spoon the sand was poured into the specimen tube in small layers and then compacted. When the length of the specimen...
