Introduction
Reading books and stories have been some kind of obsolete activity for the individuals of all ages in the modern context. In fact, it is due to the fact that most of the texts have been digitalized (Flynn). No doubt, it has improved how people should view the content of books which is worthy to be read but at the same time; it has taken that opportunity from them to ‘pass their fingers through the pages of the book’. Jacqueline Woodson takes up an unorthodox approach to show how her slow reading habit turned her into a renowned writer. She redefines the limits of reading and enjoying the content and her book should be taken by the committee. It is because reading slowly connects people with the rest of the world in different way, it gives access to the content deeply as well as it improves the way people should really read a particular book.
Slow Reading as the Strength of Author
At first, it is significant to note here that Woodson mentions her slow reading habit which turned out to be her greatest strength. Initially, she compares her reading habit with her siblings who were ‘smart enough’ to maintain the pace of reading, which she never achieved. However, she could not understand why this pace was even required to read a book (Stevenson). She is of the view that one should prefer going through a book’s page in a word by word manner and that is exactly the method which she applied to her personal reading approach (Stevenson). This is even strengthened by the idea that she descends from a family where people are not permitted either to read or to write. Her condition in this sense was challenging to read something with the slowest speed ever possible.
Additionally, slowly reading — with her finger running beneath the words even though she was told not to — has lead Jacqueline Woodson to a life of savouring books. She asks us to slow down and appreciate stories that lead us to places we never expected to go and introduce us to people we never expected to meet in a poetic discussion. Isn't that what it's all about, at the end of the day, finding a way to not feel so...
