TT1 Tutorial Task 1 (individual) ‘Town Acres’ historical development research Aim: The aim of this initial tutorial assignment is to acquaint you with local resources and methods for conducting historical research on architectural and urban development, and the social and cultural heritage of Adelaide, South Australia, in particular. Task Each student will be allocated one of the original ‘town acres’ of the city of Adelaide, as surveyed by Col. William Light and his associates in the earliest surviving plan for the new town drawn in 1837. Your tasks are to: · Identify your ‘acre’ on both the original city plan, and an up-to-date plan or aerial view of the city today and graphically document the development of that acre between then and now at (approximately) 50-year intervals (i.e. 1880s, 1930s, 1980s) in a series of figure-ground block plans. · Find and accurately identify at least one (or more) historical images (photos, etchings, lithographs, drawings, paintings, etc.) of the state of development on your acre (buildings, civil works, landscaping or agriculture) at each of the 3 previous stages of development documented in your block plans. · Identify the original owner of the land title to your assigned town acre, and provide a short (100-200 word) statement – if any biographical information can be found – about their role and stature in the new colony · Identify any officially registered historical places that may be situated in/on your town acre, and briefly outline their heritage significance. · Provide a concise account of your research process to source the visual and historical evidence interpreted in this assignment, and fully and accurately list all resources consulted in accordance with university guidelines for academic referencing. This list of sources should also be organised in subsections to explain the range and type of sources consulted, i.e. ‘primary’ (original historical documents, photos, plans, drawings etc..) and ‘secondary’ (later published sources in print, such as books and articles, as well as online media). NOTE: Even in instances where little or no historical visual materials were found your research efforts and process should still be fully explained. Submission · Graphic component: single pdf file, 3-5 pages A3 landscape NOTE: all sheets should be neatly and efficiently composed and annotated. Plans must be drawn to an appropriate and consistent scale to communicate the information effectively. · Written component: single pdf file, 2-3 pages A4 portrait NOTE: Includes statements about the original owner of the acre and any relevant heritage places, and a concise account of your research process, with list of sources. Developed drafts of both components must be submitted for presentation and feedback in the week 5 tutorial sessions. Final revised submissions may be uploaded to MyUni for summative assessment by the prescribed deadline (see ‘Assignments’) Assessment 15% Criteria: Graphic documentation of historical development of town acre is clear and comprehensive, and consistent with task specifications 30 Additional visual evidence of historical developments is clearly and logically documented and accurately identified through captions and references to sources 20 Concise written statements provide insight into the identity of the original title holder, and potential historical significance of later developments in this town acre 20 Provides a concise account of a diligent and resourceful effort to find relevant historical material, supported by a comprehensive list of appropriate sources 20 References to sources are fully and consistently formatted 10 Total 100
