SHEPHERDS THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY Shepherds Theological SeminaryName _____________________________________ New Testament Studies I (BE 511) FS #2: New Testament Theology Response Sheet Reading Assignment #1: “Introduction: A brief survey of the development of the study of New Testament Theology” in New Testament Theology, by Donald Guthrie (IVP), pp 21-27 Written Assignment: Answer the questions below. 1.On page 22, DG states, “It is the rise of the modern critical period, covering the last two centuries, which has caused the field of NT theology both to come into its own and yet at the same time to suffer many setbacks.” Over the next several pages he develops that tension between indebtedness to and endangerment by the critical mentality. Give your reaction to that discussion and, more specifically, indicate your own comprehension of the tension between the importance/value and danger/error of a critical approach to the Scripture. 2.Notice the 2nd full paragraph on p 24, which discusses the Religionsgeschichte (religion as history) school of William Wrede and others. Given just that paragraph, in what very important way(s) is that approach distinct from (perhaps antithetical to) the approach to the study of Christian theology which had been dominant in centuries past? 3.On pages 24, 25, Guthrie posits that in the early 20th century – especially under R. Bultmann – search for historical understanding of the NT was largely abandoned in favor of an approach which drew its “inspiration from existential philosophy.” How do you understand “existentialism,” and how does that mentality impact the way a person understands the Scripture? 4.Summarize Guthrie’s conclusion regarding the state of NT Theology, given in the final paragraph to this section (p 27). Reading Assignment #2: Lecture: “Six Primary Distinctives of New Testament Revelation” Simply read through the lecture giving greater attention to the body of the material and less to the appendices. Written Assignment: Record below any thoughts or question you have in the course of the reading. (If none, that is acceptable. I am looking for points of genuine confusion, interest, or refinement. SHEPHERDS THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY BE 511 NT1: Mathew - Acts Shepherds Theological Seminary Professor: Doug Bookman Focus Study #2: Canonicity Response Assignment Reading Assignment #3.1: The Cradle, The Cross and The Crown, pp. 2-33 Questions: Note: “Bullet” style brief answers are fine. 1.State briefly the issue(s) at stake under the heading, the canonization of the Scriptures. 2.Summarize “The Witness of the New Testament” (p 5ff) with reference to the issue of canonization, and indicate the passages to which the author appeals to demonstrate that witness. 3.Summarize “The Witness of the Early Church Fathers” (p 6) and of “the Muratorian Canon” (p 8). 4.The author suggests five “stimuli for Canonization” (p 8-9). Given that list, in what era (time frame) is the process of canonization happening? 5.List the (very standard) “Criteria of Canonicity” (p 9f.). What does that list suggest regarding the identity of the final authority in that decision-making process? 6.Read carefully the section entitled “Ecclesiastical Debates Regarding the Canonicity of Individual Books” (11-13). Again, what is the time period under consideration in this process? In that regard, is it legitimate or helpful to distinguish between the acceptance of a given book as genuine Scripture and the later acceptance of that book by the Christian community across the globe? 7.The section “Recent Developments in Scholarship on the NT Canon” is not particularly helpful with regard to the discussion at hand. Read that section quickly, but notice the list of questions taken by a critical scholar who rejects the idea of a library of authoritative books; specifically, notice the locus of authority assumed in that list. 8.Again, the discussion under “The Evidence for an Early Canon of Core NT Books” is not particularly germane to the real issue, primarily because it relates to the issue of distribution and ecclesiastical acceptance rather than that of initial acceptance of individual books. 9.Regarding Sidebar 1.3: The “Canonical Edition” of the NT – what do the five evidences appealed to be Trobisch suggest regarding the idea that the canon was still in the process of formulation in the days of Eusebius (early C4)? 10.The section “The Current Order of New Testament Books” is interesting, but not important to the basic issue of canonization. On the other hand, notice the statement made regarding the order of the Synoptic Gospels (p 29), and compare it to the statement regarding the placement of John at the end of that same paragraph. 11.Note carefully the “Conclusion” on p 33. Is there any disparity or dissonance between that conclusion and the body of the section on Canonicity? Note that there are additional questions related to a 2nd reading on the next page. Reading Assignment #3.2: “Appendix II: The Canon of the New Testament: How and When Formed,” from B. B. Warfield’s Collected Works , pp 451-56. (Note: this excerpt is found appended to the class notes on Canonicity, available on the Populi site. It is also on Populi under Lessons and in the Dropbox folder. Hint: when you access the document from Populi, download the original .doc file.) Questions: 1.Warfield begins by insisting that “it is necessary to begin by fixing very firmly in our minds one fact which is obvious enough when attention is once called to it.” What is that “one fact”? In that connection, what is the significance of that “one fact” with reference to the issue of the development of the canon of the New Testament? 2.In conclusion to the second full paragraph of the article , Warfield states that the early church understood the Scriptures to be “not a closed but an increasing ‘canon’.” Explain carefully what Warfield means by this. (Compare the first sentence of the next paragraph.) 3.In four paragraphs , Warfield provides evidence, both biblical and extra-biblical, demonstrating that the writings of the apostles were immediately accepted as Scripture, possessing authority and dignity entirely equal to that of the Hebrew Scriptures. In your mind, what is the strongest line of evidence in that regard. And what significance does that reality have to the issue of “canonicity”? 4.Beginning at , Warfield introduces the distinct issue of the distribution of the New Testament books, and in that regard asks four questions. In the paragraphs to follow he addresses each of those questions. The questions are listed below. Summarize Warfield’s reply to each. a.When was the New Testament Canon completed? b.When did any one church acquire a completed canon? c.When did the completed canon--the completed Bible--obtain universal circulation and acceptance? d.On what ground and evidence did the churches with incomplete Bibles accept the remaining books when they were made known to them? 5.Warfield states that “it was not exactly apostolic authorship which in the estimation of the earliest churches, constituted a book a portion of the ‘canon’.” In that regard: a.Warfield goes on to acknowledge that early in the post-apostolic era “apostolic authorship was, indeed, early confounded with canonicity.” Which epistles were affected by this confusion? b.Warfield goes on in that same paragraph to state that “The principle of canonicity was not apostolic authorship, but imposition by the apostles as ‘law.’” Explain what he means by “imposition” and what evidence he finds to suggest that the New Testament canon did in fact develop according to that principle. 6.In his closing paragraph, Warfield makes two very important points. Restate those two points in your own words. Reading Assignment 1
1. In the discussion of the studies on the New Testament theologies by Donald Guthrie, the author develops the tension between indebtedness to and endangerment by the critical mentality. Based on my understanding after reading the discussion, it is not possible to design a New Testament theology that will satisfy all the aspects of the different schools of thought.
The importance of a critical approach to the Scripture is the notion of liberal thinking. They look at the Scripture from a historical perspective. The new critical approach made the text less authoritative and didactic as well. However, critical approach is reductionist, as it has reduced the magnanimous figure of Jesus Christ as an important historical figure.
2. Religion as history school of William Wrede and others had a historical approach towards the New Testament. This approach made the text a less authoritative source of early Christian theology, as well as transformed it into a general image of the first century religion.
3. Existentialism explores the problems and crises of human existence based on the idea that human beings are free agents who can control their choices and actions.
An existential way of understanding the Scripture is based on the idea that individuals must have the freedom to interpret the writings of the Scripture in an individualistic manner. The institutions should not restrict that liberty from the individuals. Scriptures should not be dogmatic, rather it ought to be open to interpretation.
4. According to Guthrie, there can be no agreement regarding the aims of New Testament, as it is impossible to meet all the needs of the different schools of thought. At most, individuals can prioritise the aims of the Scripture in an individualistic manner based on his/her understanding. However, the individual has to outline the reasons behind his perspective in clear terms.
