Identify the network OSI layers at which various network devices operate; LO5. Use some basic tools/utilities for network analysis Assessment Details Background Better Box Corporation manufactures cardboard boxes. The organization headquarters is in Chicago. The headquarters consists of three departments: IT support, sales, and Marketing. The IT support is located on the first floor, while the marketing and the sales departments are located on second and third floors of the building respectively. IT support has 20 workstations, Marketing has 10 workstations, and sales has 50 workstations. Some applications require that data be shared between departments, but generally, each department has its own applications. Every workstation needs access to the Internet, Intranet, and e-mail system. The head office also requires wireless internet connectivity for all the floors. Suppose you are the network engineer for this organization and your IT manger asked you to design the network for head office. The Better Box is also expanding to establish two additional offices in the future namely Seattle and Dallas. In its new network company will be installing Four new servers: 1. Web Server (Chicago): An HTTP server to store web pages for public access to corporate marketing information 2. Site server (Chicago, Seattle, Dallas): Three servers, one at each site that provide e-mail services to enable employees to communicate about important projects, store site- specific management files and sales files. Your task to prepare a networking solution that enables employees in all offices to communicate both internally in that office and, to a lesser extent, between the other offices and head office. According to the specifications provided, the most user resource requirements will be met by servers located in the same office as the users who need to access them. The main communication requirements between offices relate to e-mail and periodic file transfers. The assignment has two tasks Task A: write a report with the following sections: 1. Introduction 2. LAN network design for Headquarters 2.1. Discuss the location of all workstations and interconnecting devices 2.2. Discuss and justify Media types 2.3. Discuss the LAN topology and protocols 2.4. 1. Introduction:
Better Box is a cardboard manufacturing company. It’s headquarter is located at Chicago. The headquarter is a three story building with a work force of around 80 people. The majority of the s
taff from IT, Sales and Marketing team are located at the headquarter. The company is also planning to expand its operations to other states in Seattle and Dallas.
The company headquarters hosts two servers one in DMZ and the other in a secure zone. As a part of their expansion plan the company also needs two servers at each of their sites at Seattle and Dallas. The connectivity between the headquarter and the remote site could be provided using VPN.
2. LAN Network Design of Headquarters
2.1
The headquarters building have three departments IT Support, Marketing and Sales Department located on 1st, 2nd and 3rd floor respectively. The IT department has 20 employees, Marketing Department has 10 employees and the Sales department has 50 employees.
In the LAN Network design we will connect each workstation on the floor with an access switch. The access switch will then connect to the two redundant core switches. Thus, providing high availability to the users on each floor. Also, each floor will have an Access Point connected to the access switch to provide wireless connectivity to the users.

In the LAN Network Design we will use Cat 6a crossover ethernet cable which is an updated version of Cat 6 Ethernet cables. It can be used to achieve a speed of 10 Gigabits per second on 10BaseG-T networks. It provides a standard 100 meter cable length. Cat 6a cable contains a foil shield between the outer sheath and the inner conductors, This shield helps reduce the interference which subsequently increases the network performance. The same cables will be used for other connections between workstations, switches and to connect access points on each floor.
2.3
For the LAN Network Design we will use collapsed distribution Network distribution topology. In this topology the distribution layer is collapsed into access and core layers.
