NURS1102 – Using Research in Nursing Major assignment (2000 words) This assignment involves finding an issue you have encountered in practice – this could be your clinical practice or nursing related work if you are employed in healthcare. Identify and reflect on the issue. Conduct a search for literature related to this issue and provide a brief overview of the evidence. Please be creative in identifying issues related to where you would like to work in the future – you may have also witnessed or experienced something during your clinical placements that you feel could be done better. This is your chance to prove that this is the case. Some examples may include: · Mental health: Nurses roles in seclusion reduction. · Medical settings: How can we recognise delirium better? · Community nursing: What are the risks in community visiting? · Surgical settings: Is post-operative pain assessment by nurses effective? Introduce your paper and provide some objectives. Define the issue you will be discussing. Make sure you provide a search strategy – as discussed in lectures, searches need to be repeatable and believable! Describe the evidence you have found Quantitative/Qualitative. It may be better to do this in themes to make the structure of your paper stronger. Finally, provide a discussion/conclusion that draws this evidence together to support change in the issue you have identified. References must be in APA 6th edition. Be sure to provide strong evidence to inform your arguments. AND THE STRUCTURE/CRITERIA OF THE ABSTRACT IS GIVEN BELOW. Abstract The final assessment task for this subject involves the presentation of the issue identified in your major assignment using three slides in six minutes. You also need to provide a 250-word abstract that summarises the findings of your analysis of the literature. Your three slides will be presented during a seminar day at the end of the semester and be marked by a panel who you will present to. Your presentation will be timed for six minutes and marks are allocated for keeping to this time. It may pay to follow a set structure, for example identifying your issue on the first slide, summarising the key points of the literature on the second slide and recommendations to improve practice/further research on the final slide. Remember, this subject is about using the research to support your argument and critical thinking so merely providing a three-slide summary of a topic will not get you many marks. Your abstract needs to identify the issue and provide a brief synopsis of the literature findings in 250 words. It should not require any referencing and read as a strong overview of your paper. Consider looking at the abstracts of journal articles during the semester to get a feel of how to structure your abstract. The abstract must be submitted on the seminar day. Mental health: Nurses roles in seclusion reduction
Abstract
Mental health represents the state of mind and condition of an individual that results in imparting different behavioural implications in the setting. To ensure mental health care restraint and seclusion are consider as behavioural management interventions that mainly support in controlling the behaviour of the patients. The report focuses on assessing the role of nurses in seclusion reduction as it is used in the situation when a patient acts as a danger to other people
in the healthcare unit.
In the present report, the researcher has examined the issue of seclusion in the mental health care with considering the different situation that exists in the setting that requires executing the concept of seclusion in the premises. Along with this, a report has also focused on examining the critical roles of nurses in the present environment to reduce the level of seclusion among the mentally ill patients so that it might not lead to severe his overall condition. To control and manage a mentally ill patient it is required by nurses to engage in practices such as enabling proper planning, monitor the health of the patient, administer treatments, provide support and advice and befriend to them.
Through conducting the report, it has also been recommending that by undertaking proper care, imparting adequate interaction and creating a comfort zone and familiar atmosphere it will result in overcoming the situation of seclusion. However, it has been regarded that the aggressive behaviour of the patient is considered as one of the main reason for adopting seclusion. With the implementation of such steps and efforts, nurses would engage in taking proper care of the patient through which seclusion can be somehow reduced or eliminated.

Introduction
Mental health of an individual refers to a condition or state of mind of a person which includes its emotional, social and psychological well being (Colaizzi, 2016). Good mental health is a foremost requirement at every stage of life. Nurses play a very important and supportive role in maintaining the condition of individuals those who are suffering from mental sickness.
Reducing use of seclusion in mental health has created wide interests. The present report focuses on assessing the mental health of individuals and the role and responsibility of a nurse in reducing seclusion. While working as an intern in Mental Health Australia I have witnessed the case of mentally ill patients. The majority of mentally ill patients were above the age of 38.
Objective- The key objective of the report is to measure the role of nurses in seclusion reduction.
Definition of identified issue
The identified issue focuses on increasing seclusion in the care centre that leads to impact the overall mental health of patients. During the internship period, I had learned about a concept of seclusion as it is a practice or act of being isolated. It involves the formal placing of a person in an isolated room in order to manage the violent behaviour or being segregated from others in search of the peaceful environment (Dahm et al. 2017). I have witnessed various situations when seclusion is being used to prevent imminent harm provided by the patient to self and others.
Reflection and clear relevance to practice
As a graduate entry medical student, I have learnt about the various issues that assist the people in committing vulnerable practices and sometimes it is due to improper mental health condition. I feel instead of being punished, these people need mental support and treatment. This sparked a keen interest in me about learning and understanding the mental health of people. So I started working as a medical intern in Mental Health Australia and my experience was hard to believe. Seclusion should not be used as a part of treatment or punishment. As an intern in the selected care unit I have learnt the role and duties of a nurse to reduce seclusion.
Overview of Literature Supporting Issue
Mental health nurses are responsible for imparting proper planning and providing support and care to people who are suffering from mental health challenges. The other roles include observing and analysing patients who are mentally ill, acting as a patient advocate, proper caring of the patient etc.
As per the view of Jackson, Baker & Berzins (2018), seclusion can only be considered when there is a clear identification that a person who is going to be secluded is harm to the self as well as others. However, in the premises there is not an alternative measure was left to prevent the patient from the self-harm situation. On the contrary to this, Green, Shelly & Walker (2018) has stated that there must be some clear benefit to the patient or individual for whom seclusion is being used as it assist the patient with amending their behaviour and mental state. The decision regarding seclusion is made by the psychiatric team or medical staff those who are in charge of providing care services to the patients.
The nurse has to play various roles in order to control and manage a...
