In the last two lectures of our first module, we'll be looking at the cultures of East and West Asia during the Early Modern period. For this unit, we'll be reading and discussing several primary sources that deal with, among other topics, marriage and the behavior of men and women within the context of marriage. For this assignment, read the excerpts ofKhayaral-Din and AbulFazl in yourHuman Recordreader, and theQingLaw Codeon marriage (link also available on Weebly). These are three very different sources--a non-binding legal opinion, a Muslim recounting Hindu practices, and a law code--written for three different purposes, all within the context of patriarchal societies. Given these variances, craft an essay of 4-5 pages that answers the following question: How dothe behavioral expectations laid on both men and women compare in these societies? In other words, what seem to be the major concerns regarding marital behavior for men and women in these sources?

Tip: Avoid simply telling me what the sources say, because that's not what this assignment is about. Remember that it's a comparative analysis we're after here, so if you're struggling to come up with questions to ask the source, be sure to consult theMaking a Historical Argument handouton the Weeblywebsite. It would also be a good idea to read the essay submission guidelines and grading rubric, which can be found in your course syllabus.
