INDG 1001H Reflection Paper #1 Due Friday January 29th, 2021 @ 12 Noon Eastern Standard Time. 15% of the final grade Demonstrating Awareness will get a D or F, demonstrating Understanding will get a C, demonstrating Knowledge will achieve a B. Students who seek Wisdom are on track to achieve an A! Indigenous Elders see learning as a movement around the medicine circle: from awareness to understanding to knowledge and then to wisdom. We gain awareness through listening and reading; we gain understanding from our ability to present the material we’ve learned; we gain knowledge when we think about what we’ve learned and make sense of it in our own thoughts and lives; we gain knowledge when we seek to act upon our knowledge. The reflection papers are our interpretation of the movement around the medicine circle. Through your reading and listening and watching, you have created awareness. The reflective process asks you to do two things: recite/list what you’ve learned to demonstrate your understanding and then make sense of the material, i.e. to be able to place your learning in a larger context or in your own life. Reflection papers are written in the first person. They start with a recitation, perhaps a list of what you’ve learned and then go the next step to illustrate what the learning means to you. In doing so, you’ve moved from awareness to understanding and knowledge. If you speak about how you might use your new knowledge, you are creating wisdom. To accomplish this goal: • The reflection paper text will focus on the lecture content and reading around The Long Assault/colonialism including references to materials presented in the 21 Things lectures from modules/weeks 1 to 3. • The reflection paper text will incorporate materials from the IK Moment and Content Moment presented in the course to date. • The reflection will apply at least one reference from each of the three modules. • The paper will incorporate key questions 1 to 3. They are as follows: o What is the historical record? (awareness) o What is the rationale that informs the historical record? (awareness) o What are the implications of the historical record? (understanding and knowledge) Your reflection paper will be 3 to 4 full (double-spaced) pages in length. This does not include title pages or reference pages as required by APA formatting requirements. Use the key questions and other descriptive headings to help you to organize the paper. a) All assignments must be submitted electronically via Blackboard. b) All work is due on the date set out in the syllabus unless otherwise announced and agreed upon. c) Blackboard will allow for late electronic submission of assignments. It records the date and time of your submission so that appropriate penalties can be applied. d) Please ensure that your work is submitted as a MSWORD file. Please do not submit PDF files. PDF files will not be graded. The paper must be accompanied by the Check List for Indigenous Studies 1001H papers found in the INDG 1001 Syllabus. This checklist must include the signed ethics declaration confirming that your submission is your work. Papers submitted without the checklist (found at appendix one of the syllabus) will not be graded. Introduction
The case of colonism in United States of America is quite interesting. Inspite of the fact that the settlers came from outside the nation and propelled by the drives of expansionism of Europe, the actual democracy and implications of the same to the European deployment has provided a different image. Settlers in United States worked out the legislation that any person born within the boundaries of United States of America will be just American It Is draft in line with the principles of the Democratic governance and affiliation to the same (Stuchtey2017). However, this has discriminatory influence on the settlers. The first is the fact that the native Americans and those who came to America for colonial expansion and their heirs now do have the same legilslatory status in the country, it is against the spirit that the democracy is the for the people, of the people and by the people. (Hopkins, 2019).
