Advantages of the US healthcare System compared to Mexico
World Health organization describes the Universal Healthcare System in the world as the system that provides quality healthcare services to all the people of a particular nation with the minimum cost incurred while getting the access to such services (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2019). The United States of America is among the 32 countries that are part of the OECD system or Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development that have adopted the Universal Healthcare systems according to the World Health Organization guidelines (OECD Health at a Glance, 2019). These are aimed at providing a sustainable development not just in terms of healthcare services but also in terms of financial and economic benefits (Smith & Medalia, 2019).
The United states have one of the best healthcare systems in the world. The mark of a good healthcare system based on a few criterias. These include:
1. Quality of care provided
2. Financial cost of each service provided
3. The availability of access of a particular healthcare facility across the nation (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2019).
Based on the above criteria the following comparisons are made between the two. Both the countries are primarily capitalist based and each of them has adopted several measures to provide the best healthcare facilities (Shvedova, & Khukhreva, 2018). Yet in terms of quality and care, the United States has an upper hand. . Apart from these organizations, the contributions of nonprofit organizations and donations from charitable individuals have also helped in reducing the cost.
    According to the international reports published by the OECD forum, the United States spend more money on the hybrid healthcare system than the neighboring country of Mexico (National Research Council, 2019). Reports suggest that the United States spends almost 8,713 dollars per person or 16.4 % of its GDP on health care. This is far higher than the OECD average of 8.9 percent per person (Wikler, Bausch & Cutler, 2019). Following the U.S. were the Netherlands, which allocated 11.1 percent of its GDP, then Switzerland also at 11.1 percent, and Sweden, which allocated 11 percent of its GDP to health care in 2018 (Long, Rae, Claxton, Jankiewicz & Rousseau, 2016). Apart from the U.S, Canada and Mexico spent respectively 10.2 percent and 6.2 percent of their GDP on health care. This means that the administration of US government has considerably played a part in providing high quality healthcare systems (Kelin, 2019).
Apart from that, the US healthcare is mainly funded by third party payer’s money. Third party payers include the insurance companies, the profit and nonprofit organization and the other private employers that are involved in the healthcare industry (Harbage and Furnas, 2019). Including their contributions, it has been estimated that on a per capita basis the United States, spends more than double the 3,453 USD averages of all OECD countries (Majerol, Newkirk & Garfield, 2015). Since 2013, the U.S. have also spent 1,026 USD per capita on pharmaceuticals and other non-durable medical care, more than double the OECD average of 515 USD (Smith and Medalia, 2019) As reports suggests, most of the growth that has occurred in the healthcare policies are mainly due to the contributions of the third party payers and the administration.
Although much of the benefits lie in terms of quality, with U.S. reportedly having the best care facilities in the world. Although most people in the United States has access to insurance plans, there has been an estimated value of almost 59 % that are still unable to get access to the high quality care (Garfield, Majerol, Damico& Foutz, 2016). In order to decrease such percentages, a hybrid model has been proposed for the welfare of the people. This would allow the beneficiaries not to face the burden of paying their premiums alone but allow others to be able to pay for their insurance. This multi payer insurance plan would substantially decrease the cost of care (Battista & John, 2018).
In terms of quality, care the U.S. ranks fifth in the world with the most modern equipments. In terms of the locations of the care facilities, the United states have ranked 12th while Mexico has 19th rank worldwide (U.S. Department of Labor, 2019). U.S. has also ranked 11th in terms of modern equipments whereas Mexico ranks 25th.
