Introduction
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Australia are one of the oldest communities, which invaded the Australian land. Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders are among the most incarcerated people in the world (Nash & Arora, 2021). There have been numerous incidents, which demarcated the native communities from non-native Australians and not providing them with equal human rights needs to be presented as one of the major rationales behind this. This paper will discuss the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, historical incidents along with suppression of their human rights.
The present individual written essay has been focussed upon this topic only, about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of Australia, who have always been the point of discussion from various perspectives, owing to their very different lifestyles and their way of thinking or looking at the world, which set them apart. These have led to think seriously about their rights, who have been discriminated in the process of self-existence.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in Australia
There are around 370 million indigenous people around the world with their distinct cultures, race and linguistic backgrounds (Davy et al., 2017). However, all of them faces some of the common issues and not receiving equal rights or opportunities is one of them. History marks the time of colonisation when due to British invasion, these native communities were forced to leave their lands and move away from the modern civilisation.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are vulnerable to mistreatment majorly due to colonisation. These native communities have scared connection with their lands and in order to protect the possession of their lands, they were forced to fight with the British invaders. Numerous riots and violent encounters led to loss of indigenous lives as well as loss of their lands (Arthur & Rolan, 2019).
Further, the non-native Australian leaders failed to address and understand indigenous cultures. ‘The lost generation’ where native children were forcibly removed from their families and were given to non-native Australian parents in order to raise them. This was considered as a move towards social acceptance of native communities and was proposed as a method to increase the indulgence of native Australians among non-natives (Lee et al., 2019).
