For this assignment, analyze and evaluate who owns your media. How do these companies make money from you? How do you feel about this aspect of your media use?Do you feel comfortable with the data that companies have for you? Use data to support your argument, such as your Google tracking data, and/or your Web Historian browsing data. Does this exercise make you think of your phone, apps or your data differently? If so, how?


As noted in the syllabus, your paper should have the following elements:



  • Be about 400-600 words in length (about 2 full pages double spaced)

  • Respond to the writing prompt

  • Synthesize information from the class readings and apply it to your own life.

  • Follow a5 paragraph essay structurewith anintroduction, thesis statement, paragraphs with topic sentences that provide evidence, and a conclusion. (For assistance in writing, please see D2L-->content->writing resources).

  • Properlycite at least two sources.These can be our readings, or outside sources. Citations should be noted in parentheses in the text, and listed at the end of the essay under works cited. Pleaseuse APA style.

Who Owns My Media: Reflections
Socrates questioned the "propriety and impropriety of
writing", expressing his fear of a new medium, the same fear expressed by later generations at the wake of a new medium. However, it is a truth now universally accepted that our lives revolve around the media. As technology developed, media evolved into newer avatars, remediation happened, and finally came digital media that wholly altered our experiences. With mobile technologies and smart appliances, digital media has become our permanent companion, often even in our sleep.
With such ubiquity of the digital media, what was once personal became more public. The more we share our content (information) online, the more we let media conglomerates gather it to use back on us to advertise their products and services. The question, therefore, is whose media is it, ours or theirs? In a study named the Middletown Media Studies, it was found that our use of media is twice that of what we believe and that we often use more than one media at a time. While it is natural for media use to increase with its spread and easy availability, how this has altered interpersonal relationships, making our lives nearly transparent, is of serious concern.
