Instructions
Please complete the designated exercises from your textbook according to the specified instructions for each question.
For the questions 3-12, which are based on Chapter VI: Deductive Arguments, you should also follow these additional, specific instructions:
For the set of questions 3-12, you should work with the exercises in the section "Critical Thinking Activities: Recognizing deductive argument forms"on pp. 530-532 in your textbook.
Please ignore the two subsections called "Instructions" "Final Product" and the three called "Variation" in thepreceding parts of this section on pp. 528-529; these are not relevant to the test.
Instead of the instructions on p. 528-529, you should follow these modified instructions:
Each of the ten passages on pp. 530-532 in Exercises 1-10 usesup to twoforms of deductive argument covered in Rules 22-26. For each of these Exercises 1-10, please clearly indicate the following two pieces of information:
- Whether the passages uses a single deductive argument form or two deductive argument forms (note that some arguments may use the same argument formtwice;this counts as two deductive argument forms and should be indicated as such)
- What deductive argument form(s) the passage uses among the following: modus ponens, modus tollens, hypothetical syllogism, disjunctivce syllogism, dilemma
If you find that only one deductive argument form is used in the passage, then list just that one form. However, if you find that the same deductive argument is used twice, then you should indicate this in your answer. For example, if you think that a passage uses modus ponens twice, you should indicate this clearly by writing "modus ponens (2x)" .
Each of your answers is worth up to 2 points.
If you correctly identify whether the passage uses a single deductive argument form or two deductive argument forms, then you will earn 1 point. If you do not correctly identify whether the passage uses a single deductive argument form or two deductive argument forms, then you will earn 0.5 points.
If you correctly identify the deductive argument form(s) used in the passage, then you will earn 1 point. If you do not correctly identify the deductive argument form(s) used in the passage, then you will earn 0.5 points.
Showing additional work, e.g. variable assignments and argument steps, is optional and thereby not required for credit.
Lastly, I strongly encourage you to review the "Tips for Success" provided in Exercise Set 6.5 (on pp.161-162) before working on your answers, as these are also very relevant to the questions in this set.
