Introduction
Globalization has created a more complex and culturally diversified workplace. It is not
easier to lead such a workplace and leaders have to equip themselv
es with the qualities required
to manage the current workforce. They have to make a global approach to be able to manage a
diversified team. The leaders need to adopt multiple skills necessary to lead diversified and
complex teams.
Leadership Redefined
The Contingency theory of leadership takes only two factors into the consideration i.e.
relationship or task. And the major difference between these two is based on the kind of
interpersonal relationship leader and coworkers have. In culturally diversified and globally
spread organization, the contingency theory does not have much relevance. Partially, the theory
can be true in some contexts but this cannot be relevant in all contexts. Globalization has
changed the way leadership used to be. It has redefined the leadership and the leaders will have
to be consistent with the best practices to effectively manage the teams.
The leadership is a combination of skill sets that enable the leaders to manage the
diversified teams. The leadership in not confined to the workplace only but it is aimed at
contributing its bit to the society. The society will only accept a leader who is concerned about
the society by all means and is ready to do his/her part for the society. The people will only
accept the leader if they find that he/she belongs to them and is one of them. Also, the leader
cannot choose to be arrogant and detector in his/her behavior, the leader can get respect and
acceptance only if he/she gives due respect to others.
Personal Experience
The project managers are task oriented and they facilitate the team with technology for better

sharing of information in real-time. It is more or less based on Machiavellian theory, end justifies
the means. The main objective of the project manager is to get the project completed within
stipulated time and that too successfully. The project managers are somehow successful in his
approach but they lag behind on interpersonal front (Chhokar, J.S. et al., 2007).
The project manager provided the latest and required technology that helped a great deal in
completing the project but just providing technology is not the solution. When people come in
close contact to each other, they need to have proper communication and interpersonal relation to
sail through the project. The technology is never a solution or substitute to leadership.
Technology can assist in getting the things done but leadership is the main element of that.
As the leader was handling a culturally diversified team, he needs to possess certain skills
required to manage such a team. He needs to adopt and build the best practices that connect
every member so that they can work in full confidence and enhanced coordination. First of all, he
needs to possess a global mindset and then psychological, social and intellectual capital.

The project manager should have all the mentioned qualities in the Figure 1 to manage a
socially and culturally diversified global team. The leader needs to have social, psychological
and intellectual capital with knowledge and influence on cultural systems. Ethnocentrism can be

like a perceptual window through which people from one culture make subjective or critical
