INT102 - Assessment 3: Individual Written Report & Oral Presentation (30%) Due Date: Week 8 Written report (20%): Students are required to submit a written report between 1000 - 1200 words on a chosen target client group from the list below. Students are required to: • Describe the communication barriers in working with the chosen client group – remember only focus on communication barriers • Demonstrate clear understanding of the communication skills required for effectively communicating with the chosen client group – once you have identified the communication barriers, research what skills are needed to effectively overcome them • Identify applicable resources that may assist with communication when communicating with the chosen client group – again we are not looking for resources to overcome general barriers, only communication barriers. • Finally, your report must include a case study or personal experience or anecdote about a person within the chosen group which demonstrates evidence of understanding about the communication barriers associated with your client group. Client groups that can be chosen: • Children • Youth • Elderly • Disability • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people • Other group that is not listed which interests you (please see your Lecturer for approval) Your written report should include at least 5 (scholarly) journal articles read, in addition to any textbook references. Introduction
    Effective communication is very essential for people to communicate with their society for the fulfillment of both of their personal and professional objectives. However, people face multiple obstructions in establishing effective communication within the society. Mostly normal people face many difficulties in interacting with people with disabilities. There are many communication barriers between the normal people and disable people. The communication barriers arise between normal people and disable people because of the lack of communication skills among normal people. In this assignment, we will study about the communication barriers, which normal people face in working with disable people.
Communication Barriers in Working with Disabled People
    Physically able people face ample of difficulties while communicating with persons with disabilities. One of the major communication barriers between the physically able people and people with disabilities is interpersonal communication barrier. Disable people are very sensitive by nature. Therefore, when the disable people feel that the physically able people do not listen to the disable people with patience then the disable people feel insecure. Therefore, feeling insecure the disable people do not communicate with physically able people and isolate themselves in the society. On the other hand, Non- verbal communication barrier is another problem in effective communication between physically able and disable people (Badu, Agyei-Baffour & Opoku, 2016). If the disable people feel that people, who are physically able, are not showing good gesture towards disable people then the disable people feel cornered and stop communicating with the physically able people. For instance, if the disable persons feel that people are keeping distance from them because of their disability then the disables isolate them from the other people in the society.
