Nonverbal Communication Nonverbal Communication What is it? “Nonverbal communication refers to gestures, facial expressions, eye contact (or lack thereof), body language, posture, and other ways people can communicate without using language.” Types of Nonverbal Communication Facial Expressions Gestures Paralinguistics Body Language and Posture Proxemics Eye Gaze Haptics Appearance Artifacts Facial Expressions: Happiness, anger, sadness and fear are same around the world. Gestures: Waving, pointing, and using fingers to indicate numeric number Body Language and Posture: over-interpretation of defensive postures, arm-crossing, and leg-crossing Proxemics: Personal Space Eye Gaze: Normal, steady eye contact is often taken as a sign that a person is telling the truth and is trustworthy. Shifty eyes and an inability to maintain eye contact, on the other hand, is frequently seen as an indicator that someone is lying Haptics: Touch (classic monkey Theory) Appearance: Choice of color, Colothing, hairstyle or Physical body appearance Artifacts: Bitmojis, online avatar, image tools Evaluating Nonverbal Signs Eye contact – Is the person making eye contact? If so, is it overly intense or just right? Facial expression – What is their face showing? Is it masklike and unexpressive, or emotionally present and filled with interest? Tone of voice – Does the person’s voice project warmth, confidence, and interest, or is it strained and blocked? Posture and gesture – Is their body relaxed or stiff and immobile? Are their shoulders tense and raised, or relaxed? Touch – Is there any physical contact? Is it appropriate to the situation? Does it make you feel uncomfortable? Intensity – Does the person seem flat, cool, and disinterested, or over-the-top and melodramatic? Sounds – Do you hear sounds that indicate interest, caring or concern from the person? CASE STUDY Case Study: 2020 August A Case Study on Nonverbal Communication In EFL, “English as a Foreign Language” Classes. “In his study, Gallo (2007) has identified that people tend to communicate nonverbally: 7% of communication involves actual words and the other 93% is nonverbal. He further states that 38% is vocal nonverbal signals such as pitch, speed, and volume of one’s voice and 55% of the nonverbal is visual such as body language and eye contact (Gallo, 2007).”
