Japan’s surrender ending World War II led to the division of Korea with the Soviet Union occupying the north and the United States occupying the south. After years of mutual hostilities, communist North Korea invaded South Korea in 1950 in an attempt to unify the country. The subsequent Korean War ended with a stalemate in 1953 and left the two Koreas separated to the present day. After years of strict separation, North Korea’s Kim Jong-un made a peace overture to South Korea and the United States.
