Each answer needs to be supported by quoted text from the article itself. Do not use first person in your answers. “American Man At Age Ten,” Susan Orlean 1) Based on the reading from pages 99-100, paragraphs 1-3, what are some of the significant differences between this type of journalism and those we have studied up until this point? 2) Select two of the following things to examine specifically as a follow-up to the previous question: voice, purpose, angle, sources, quotes, structure, format, and diction. Please use quoted examples from the text for each examination. 3) Pages 103-105 take place at a local pizzeria, and they focus on video games and social dynamics. Why would Orlean spend time focusing on these things? What value might this section offer the complete article? 4) What do pages 105-106 focus on? Why? (Hint- the story’s title.) 5) As the story heads into its final pages, Orlean pulls away from gender analysis, appears to move back to what some might describe as trivial or filler details about Colin, then discusses money as another possible aspect of gender development, and finally goes back to more trivial/filler details. Why do you think she does this? How does this develop or drive the article? 6) The author includes a few symbols (video games, money, backyard fishing line net, swingset/playset, etc.) in her article that beg analysis- select ONE symbol and offer a brief analysis of its use in the story. How does she use it as a metaphor for something else? 7) On what was Orlean reporting in this article? Please use evidence to support your explanation. “Trina and Trina,” Adrian LeBlanc 1) Pages 211-213 introduce the reader to Trina, the writer, and the connection between them. Point out and discuss differences/ similarities, so far, between this piece and “American Man…” Consider the same two things you chose to analyze from “American Man…”; voice, content, structure, purpose, angle, and diction. Use quoted text to support your explanation. 2) Chronology is an important factor to consider when examining this story and its impact. LeBlanc makes some interesting decisions early on regarding the sequence of events and how she relates them to the reader. Keep in mind that she did not write this like a diary- day to day; rather she wrote this as one complete piece after her investigation into Trina’s life was “complete.” So, how has the author chosen to format the sequence and chronology of her story? What purposes or intentions could she have had in choosing to do this? (Look carefully at paragraph two on page 213.) 3) Think about and discuss the developing role Leblanc is playing. a) What is she? b) To whom is she beholden? c) What conflicts is she creating for herself? d) How is it affecting the story, and therefore the reader’s understanding of the story? e) Has she overstepped any boundaries? Has she crossed any ethical lines? 4) Unlike Orlean from “American Man…” LeBlanc does not include many, if any, statistics or outside evidence to support her writing. There aren’t any studies on teenage prostitution, percentages about drug use, or expert analysis on recidivism. There are simply observations of and interactions between Trina and the author. a) Why do you think LeBlanc does this? b) Do you think it helps, hurts, or has some other impact on the story and your understanding of it? c) Would you have liked to see more? Why or why not? 5) Revisit the notion of the author’s use of chronology. As the story progresses and time elapses, LeBlanc says things like “I don’t hear from Trina for seven months” without exploring what’s happening in that time period. Why do you think she does this and what value does it add to the story? 6) On what was LeBlanc reporting in this article? Please use evidence to support your explanation.
