Interviewing an older adult
Interviews are an excellent tool for gathering information. Open-ended interviews are especially informative in that they allow gathering a
range of unintended information along the way (Segal, Coolidge, O'Riley, & Heinz, 2006). In the interview that I conducted with and older adult (we will call him Sam), I learnt a lot of new things about the way people grew up in the generation before us. Sam didn’t elaborate much about his origins and early childhood. He said that he was born in a robust village in India called Mangrawa. His parents didn’t tell him much about the day he was born. He spent most of his childhood in his grandmother’s place in a neighbouring village called Bairidi. He has four sisters and one brother, two of his sisters are elder to him. He spent some time in Mangrawa and then Delhi later on. He enjoyed his childhood in Bairidi best recalling it as the best time of his childhood when he didn’t have responsibilities and had a lot of freedom. He got his early schooling there as well and mentioned that he was a naughty boy who enjoyed playing more and studying less. During his childhood, there were no heroes that he looked up to. One experience that he had as a child was falling off a bicycle and breaking his hand. He didn’t answer the question about the dating practices of his time. The first person he dated or danced with was his wife. He never dated as a teenager or in college. In his younger years, he enjoyed flying kites and playing cricket. What he found really troublesome when he was a teenager was answering elders all the time about his whereabouts and what he was doing. He got his first job at 25 at a call...
