Effects of community development on the changes in the society
Community Development
Community development is a holistic approach grounded in principles of human rights, empowerment, social justice, inclusion, self-determination as well as collective action (Ledwith, 2020). It considers community members to be experts in their lives and communities, furthermore values community knowledge and wisdom (Gilchrist, 2019). Community development programs are led by community members at every stage starting from deciding on issues to selecting as well as implementing actions, in addition to evaluation (Mtika, & Kistler, 2017). This is not one-off events, consultation to inform goals or strategies, leadership training or community advisory groups or committees (Gilchrist & Taylor, 2016). All these things could be part of a community development strategy but, in terms of themselves, they are not community development. Community development has an explicit focus on the redistribution of power to address the causes of inequality and disadvantage (Edwards & Jones, 2019).
Importance of community development
Community development work has subtle differences from community-based work. While a community-based work is essentially described and identified by authorities, organizations or government in a particular community, the development based approaches usually refer to the improvement of the society bought about the members of their community. In such cases, higher authority and the government is not directly involved. Several characteristics are present for community development. These include:
Power relations between agency and community members are constantly negotiated (Saepudin, & Mulyono, 2019).
The problem or issue is first named by the community, then defined in a way that advances the shared interests of the community and the agency (Peredo & Chrisman, 2017).
Work is longer term in duration.
The desired outcome is an increase in the community members’ capacities (Gilchrist & Taylor, 2016).
The desired long-term outcomes usually include a change at the neighborhood or community level (Saepudin, & Mulyono, 2019).
In almost all such approaches of community development, a major factor in the development of a community is dependent on its youth. In many research, the power of involving youth in the has been identified (Green & Haines, 2015). The major need for community development arises to address the social and economic issues at a local or neighborhood level. Such goals are aimed at increasing community cohesion, improving community safety, reducing the social isolation faced by the people or generally create a community focused on the growth of their children and young adults (Australian Institute of Family Studies, 2019; Mtika, & Kistler, 2017). Some developments are aimed at the indigenous people that are recently migrating to the big cities and towns. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have been discriminated against over the last century, and it depends on the members of the community to help them feel accepted and integrated into their society (Higgins, 2010). Another important aspect of community development is targeted at people suffering from disabilities. Many of them face mental or physical retardation and are not able to perform regular day to day jobs. Many studies suggest that the community must include their needs and demands and to look after them (Ife, 2016; Price-Robertson, 2011; McDonald, 2011; Wallerstein, 2006).
