PREPARE A CASE STUDY IN SPORT MANAGEMENT

Students are required to investigate and prepare a detailed case study describing a sport management related example of the concepts of strategic management as discussed in class. The case study will be presented in three parts and should address a strategic issue or problem for a subject organisation.

Part 1
(approx 1500 words) will comprise an introduction and all the relevant details of the case under investigation describing a logical sequence of events as it applies to the case. You should endeavour to tell the story as it relates to the case. The structure and layout of the case is paramount, with an organisational background section, presentation of data and explanation of the key strategic issue or problem in the environment of the organisation expected in this section. As this is a capstone unit, students will be expected to gather all relevant information pertaining to the case under investigation.

Part 2
(approx 2000 words) will provide a detailed analysis of the case and the important points as they relate to strategic management. This section should include a series of key questions that illustrate the key issues in the case. Key issues to be addressed in Part 2 include an analytical overview (as opposed to descriptive background provided in Part 1) of the industry and competitive analysis, company situation analysis, strategy and competitive advantage, strategy formulation and implementation. Tools from the unit should be used as part of the analysis. Other issues may be relevant depending on the case itself and they might include strategic change, control, leadership, culture and measures of organisational performance.

Part 3
(approx 1500 words) will provide key leanings and recommendations from the case. This section should present a solution(s) to be adopted, the adoption of which should be justified relative to the problem. Critically, this section should develop a response appropriate to the sport industry context, with the impact of the solution presented. The impact of the solution should be discussed with the consideration of global or diverse communities that the organisation may serve. You may find it helpful to formulate some questions, and answer them.

Part 1
Introduction
This assignment has been based upon the sport management in the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).
This institute has been the high-performance sports training in Australia. Recently the institute has been undergoing a strategic issue, which has been a serious matter of concern. The institute has been facing the deterioration of the team performance and leadership policies. Due to this situation, the institute has failed to achieve victory in the Montreal Olympics in the year 2018-2019. The Australian State Government has been focussing on these matters and trying to make amends.
The logical sequence, which has made the failure of strategic management, has been various. For two years, this institute has been lacking in trainers to train the teammates. The rules and the regulations have not been satisfactory to the players. There have been differences of opinion about the management of the initiation of games. This situation has a gross effect on the team performances of the sports institute. AIS have been planning to hire some trained employees to cope with their strategic issue. The assignment will reflect how the institute will go to manage the crisis and its eventual outcome.
Organisational Background
The Australian Institute of Sport had its headquarters in Canberra, Australia. It has been regarded as one of the renowned sports institutes. AIS have been sharing a division with the Australian Sports Commission, a body, which has been controlled by the Australian Government. Two of the reports have been based on the development of the AIS: the Role, Scope and the Development of Recreation in Australia (Vlahovich, Fricker, Brown & Hughes, 2017). The AIS has been ingrained with well-funded programs. These well-funded programs of the institute have been regarded as the primary reason for Australia's current success in the international sports competition.
AIS have been welcomed by the Ministry of the Home Affairs and participation in the Olympics. It has participated in the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia. It has a good facility development in the field of netball, basketball and weightlifting. AIS enjoy a considerable number of staff in Sports Science and Sports Medicine. This has been including disciplines such as the performance analysis, skill acquisition and the physiology and the athlete career education (Wells et al., 2020). The institute has achieved a higher amount of revenue such as 2billion for performing in cricket and the football league in Australia.
Key Strategic Issue in the Organisation and its Stages
The stages following the strategic issue of the team performance
Development of Proper Goals
As AIS has lacked team performance in the current scenario, therefore, the imagination and application of the eight goals have been crucial (Do & Nguyen, 2020). AIS have been needed to set up well-defined objectives again in comparison to the previous rules catering to its games. AIS have been required to set up Bruce Tuckman’s Model of Team stages to cope with their current problem in team management (Improta et al., 2017).
According to this theory, AIS needs to perform for recognisable locations such as the forming, storming, norming and performing. This theory has been taken as linked with the variety of games in AIS.AIS need to set up its communicated priorities regarding, which of the games they are settling first. According to the preferences AIS needs to set up its players, budgets and the investments and fix the trainer.
Distributing Proper Roles
AIS have an urgency of distributing its roles and responsibilities again, which has affected the team performances. AIS have needed to hire a proper leader so that the ensuing communication problem, which has been raised in the institute, does not happen. It has been observed that during the games of the Acrobats by John Robinson and Gymnast by Pole Vaulter, there has been an occurrence of communication mishap regarding their fitness capabilities.
The present trainer has been unable to manage the situation and it arrived to mess in delaying the games (Constantinou & Fenton, 2017). Hence, AIS needs to remain cautious regarding hiring trainers and need to hire a desirable one. AIS have been required to hire a leader who will be pursued in the management of the communication between the players and in the institute. As AIS has been a much-expanded institute, therefore, proper roles needed to be categorised according to the designation
Proper Procedures
Since 2018, AIS has been lacking in the decision-making procedure, which affected the team performances. Hence, numerous problems have knocked on the door of the institute. Thus, the management has decided to initiate the Autocratic and democratic style of the decision-making procedures in their internal environment. This decision-making approach would be able to fulfil the gaps, which can be aroused while making the decision-making.
Therefore, decision-making needed to be improved in AIS as well as among the players. AIS are required to enhance its work procedures, especially in the management of the coach, athlete and the therapies (Bassi, Maggiorini, Granato, Ripamonti & Gadia, 2018). Additionally, AIS needed to focus on the leisure centre, which has been a vital pavement. Hence, AIS has recently launched a campaign to spread the message of their newer arrangements.
Building of Interpersonal Relationships
In the team performance, the formation of the interpersonal relationship has been crucial. AIS have been adopting Habermas Communication Theory to develop a good communication between the players and the management. Habermas theory developed two-level social theory such as the analysis of the communicative rationality and the rational potentiality. This theory has been essential in building trust among the players in a systematic way.
The outcome of the team performance has been outwardly depending upon its successive results. Therefore, the lacking facility in the team performance can be withdrawn with the building of the flexibility in e team members, to which the institute has been kindly looking forward. AIS have been focussing on these issues, which can be of dire necessity to improve the lack of team performances.
Stages Following Strategic Issue of leadership
To cope with the issues of the leadership AIS needed to adopt some leadership theories to cope with their problem.
Great Man Theory
AIS has been adopting this theory to input the qualities such as the persuasiveness and personality, perception and the intellect among the team players, which cannot be taught and learned. This theory has helped in the imparting of these skills to the leaders, which has been concerned with the management. To manage the leadership, this theory has paved the way for the scientific and the experimental legitimacy. This theory has helped spread a provisional perception in its management. This theory has been ingrained with marvellous plans, which have been ideal for the Basketball Australia Centre and Rowing Australia National Training Centre campaign (Hagger & Weed, 2019). This theory will be helpful in the maintenance of the achievement of supremacy among its members of the organisations.
Trait Theory
AIS had planned to apply the trait theory in its performances and evaluation. AIS have involved this theory in their sports management, as through this theoretical application, AIS will be able to observe the behaviours and their objective criteria. AIS can use this theory for the further development of their sport assessment techniques and the adequate descriptions of the traits, which can be used for the different purposes. It has been highly recommended by the Australian government that AIS will use this trait theory, as it will, determine the nature and characteristics of the employees (Prentice, Jayawickreme & Fleeson, 2019). This theory will help AIS equally for depicting the situations in various ways, which had arisen among the players and their mates.
Behavioural Theory
AIS have been using a behavioural approach to meet its positive and the negative responses in the environment. Due to the lack of the team performance and proper leadership, there have been various responses, coming up, which had been threatening the reputation of AIS. The flow of the positive and the negative reviews from the aspects from the audience and the viewers could be judged with the help of these theories. AIS have spoken in favour of the annual term reports that behavioural approach will likely to develop the self-belief and the self-confidence of the team members. Hence, this theory had been ideally suited for the development of the base and the foundation of AIS.
Winning Edge Strategy
In the year 2014, AIS had launched a new logo in the line of its Winning Edge Program. The Winning strategy has been established for the development of the leadership and the team performs in the sports institute (Sadq, Mohammed, Othman & Saeed, 2020). Due to the launching of this campaign, many of the national sports organisations had been utilising the facilities of the AIS and its services on an ongoing and regular basis. This Winning Edge strategy had been influential in maintaining both the team and its leadership performances (Banchuen, Sadler & Shee, 2017). Therefore, it can be judged that AIS had been grossly looking forward to the development of the team and its leadership in an effective way. Due to the development of this strategy, AIS had continued to support other athletes and funded tinder the National Training Centre of Australia.
Part 2
Overview of the Industry
The industry of the Australian Institute of Sport has been based on both public and commercial. The sector of this organisation has provided the facilities, such as the sports apparel, amateur and sporting goods to the junior as well as the senior team players (Dewerse, 2020). In comparison to other Australian sports organisations such as Australian League Centre who had been reputed in its name for Cricket and Football League, this organisation has focussed on the factory based works and the skill of the labourers and donates money for them. The preparation of the field and the armaments had been focused on the manufacturing process.
Competitive Analysis of the Company
AIS have been following specific rules in dealing with the competition in their institute. The several parameters, which are being followed by them, are AIS had developed incremental policies in their arrangement of the games to identify their competitors. The competitors such as the NetBall Australian Centre of Excellences, Football Federation of Australia Centre of Excellences, which has been achieving a higher revenue of 20% in comparison to their payments, which is only limited to 30% (Yuan, Wang & Zeng, 2017). AIS have been influential in analysing the content of the competitors, which will help them in the determination of the skills and the opportunities of the competitors.
