Take the Cultural Fair IQ (which measures nonverbal ability), Verbal-Linguistic Intelligence, and Visual-Spatial Intelligence tests online and discuss the following:

  1. The types of abilities each test appears to measure.

Cultural Fair IQ measures the ability to understand patterns using images not words. Verbal-Linguistic Intelligence measures the understanding of words while Visual-Spatial Intelligence breaks down the learning style of each person that takes the test.

2. A brief summary and interpretation of your results. Are your results consistent with your own understanding of your abilities?

My results are consistent with the expected results of my known abilities. I was very weak in the Cultural Fair IQ whereas much stronger in the Verbal-Linguistic. I understand means and how to use words compared to patterns and non-verbal objects. I tend to be very direct with my communication and not add a lot of “fluff” so this would make sense based on my results.

3.What factors might have influenced your performance?

Reading about the types of tests before taking them might have influenced my performance compared to walking into them with no expectation.

4.What are the advantages and disadvantages of taking separate IQ tests such as these instead of taking a comprehensive IQ test such as the Wechsler Scales or Stanford Binet that measure various areas of abilities in one test?

Advantages would be having a well-rounded understanding of different elements of personality and learning styles compared to not taking these assessments. So much of the time it is hard to help or teach people if the person doesn’t understand their strengths and weaknesses. This way no matter what we are using the results for it will help both sides and tailor the processes accordingly. A disadvantage would be knowing this about a person might not help them with specific tasks at hand or you will judge a person based on their results without either knowing their character in person or maybe they are just a poor test taker.

5. What are some of the limitations of using aptitude tests over other forms of measurement such as observations, evaluations by others, etc?

Limitations would be judging a book by its cover aka the results of the tests. Passing opportunities for candidates that might be a better fit simply because they didn't perform how they were “expected to” based on what a handful of people ``think” should be good results. Not the best way to judge anyone.

6.What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of utilizing online assessments versus traditional paper and pencil assessments?

Online is much faster, clearer, and easier to interpret. Whereas with traditional pencil and paper they can be hard to read, take time to interpret and it always gives the test takers the ability to not follow instructions because they are not forced to answer, unlike online they can not move forward unless the previous question is answered.

Hi Lindsay,
I completely ag
ree with you that in today’s scenario, assessment tests have gained worldwide acceptance. They are used to determine an individual’s cognitive ability. As mentioned by Tosuncuoglu (2018), they play a major role when hiring people for the job as they are expected to tell how effectively the candidate will able to perform his job role, whilst eliminating any bias through its standardized administration. The ability tests help in measuring intelligence level, verbal reasoning, logical reasoning and much more.
The Cultural Fair IQ helps to measure the intellectual ability of an individual and verbal-linguistic intelligence measures an individual’s ability to understand particular things. As supported by Anderson and Varghese (2020), it is more concerned with problem-solving and abstract reasoning. The former makes use of images and the...
