Introduction
A development project deals with the social wellbeing of a place through improving the condition of certain factors, which are otherwise in a detrimental condition. Such projects can be applied in several fields such as constructions, hospitality, industrial, medical and others, which are related to the social growth and prosperity. Proper execution of the development projects can bring soci
al, cultural and economic development to the society.
A society where the project takes place is benefited from several factors in terms of economy. The project opens the scope for income through hospitality, transportation, employment and business to the local people where the project takes place. Besides such economic development, the society experiences a social development as well. It grows a healthy relation amongst the members of the society with increased connections and friendliness.
The social development creates an openness of the minds of the people in the society, which eventually produces a cultural development. People become more open to several cultural beliefs without judging them and interaction of people with each other becomes easier in such process, which helps to sustain the developmental project. Such positive outcomes are also accompanied with some negative ones in a project development process. It affects a huge number of people who are often unable to stand for their rights.
Several numbers of people are displaced for the proper location of the project and their co-operation is got through the extensive participation in the proposed project. An extensive participation from all the members of the society irrespective of their caste, creed, or position is the main component to bring such economic, cultural and social development through any developmental project.
Extensive Participation
The participation of people in any activity at a broad range is known as extensive participation. This type of participation is found in several sectors of the society from employment to education. As mentioned by Ravinskaya et al. (2022), the extensive participation of people can result in a better and positive outcome of any project in workplace.
Several people who are affected by the project must also participate to produce a successful outcome. In any development project, the extensive participation of people of the society is included through the risk analysis, impact assessment and decision making of the project. Extensive participation of those who are affected by the project brings a broadly based social, cultural and economic development to the society.
According to Reshadi (2020), the extensive participation in any development area creates a trust among the people affected by the development. Including them in decision-making increases the trust and helps in proper execution of the development plan. The types of development broad through active participation are discussed below.
Economic Development
When any development project is executed in a society, it brings an opportunity of employment through it. For example, if any shopping complex is constructed, it provides employment option for many local people, availability of several numbers of people to bring business and grow an economic development through providing entertainment. As stated by Gruzina, Firsova and Strielkowski (2021), the economic development occurs through the human capital at any working sector.
This requires an extensive participation in each field of working of the project. A development project can both affect positively and negatively to the extensively participated members. Though both results in an economic development of the society. The development can include the displacement of a bulk of people but displacing them helps in achieving the economic development and for such purpose an extensive participation is required.
Social Development
The extensive participation of those who are affected by the development helps to achieve the social development broadly. The relation between the members of the society improves through such projects as each one of them unites in the decision-making process of the project through active participation. As mentioned by Chukwu (2020), the countries who depend on other countries for development has started undertaking several developmental projects to achieve their social and economic development.
The stability in the society can be maintained through the social development where each member of the society comes together to solve a particular problem, which may harm or has a chance of harming the society. The well-being of every individual of the society is considered irrespective of his or her position, caste, creed, or sex and this is brought by the extensive participation of the people.
Cultural Development
A development project includes several kinds of people of the society, which brings a cultural development in the society. People become more respectful and understanding towards others, which improves their mental well-being. As stated by Egamberdievna (2021), religion highly affects the cultural beliefs and practices of different people. Developmental projects help in bringing a cultural development through respecting each cultural beliefs and practices by all.
This includes the incorporation of social equality and well-being of all the people in the society. Extensive participation improves the relations of the people of the society by building trust between them, which enhances the quality of life. The conflicts related to caste, religion, marginalisation and position are all reduced by a developmental project of a place where all the people come together with unity to protect their society and look after the well-being of it. Accepting and respecting the cultural diversity of a society is included in its cultural development, which can be achieved through the extensive participation in the development
Two Development Projects
The major development projects of Australia are the WestConnex project in New South Wales and the Sydney Metro construction in New South Wales (NSW Government, 2022). The costs of both the projects are above 10 billion US dollars and are construction projects. The projects are held to remove the congestion of traffics on roads connecting highways and constructing metro services.
Through such construction projects, several environmental impacts occur, which must be properly conveyed to the people of the location. An extensive participation is required in such projects for approval of the land of construction and decision making in several sectors of the project. Such big project requires the displacement of large number of people to occupy the land for the project.
This affects the people of that local area who are residing for a long time. The approval and participation of such affected population is the major factor to bring development through the projects. A complete Environmental Impact Assessment is required, which makes the people aware about the effects of the construction project on the environment and the people living in it.
As mentioned by Dziubaniuk, Ivanova-Gongne and Berdysheva (2021), several challenges are faced in such development projects. The major one includes the challenge in interaction with the local members of the community. Interaction is the most important factor for extensive participation, which must be properly maintained for any big development project. These two big projects are major examples of social, cultural and economic development through extensive participation of the affected people of the society.
WestConnex Project
The WestConnex project is the largest infrastructural project in constructing roads in Australia to reduce the congestion and traffic during office hours. The construction joins 33 kilometres of road through a traffic light free underground tunnel, which ease the load of the congestion (NSW Government, 2022). As mentioned by Robertson, McCarthy, Jegasothy and Harris (2021), an emergency medical help requires a clear roadway service, which helps in quick arrival to the hospital.
This underground tunnel has helped in such facility to improve the health of a patient without delaying any time on the roads during an emergency. The project’s environmental impact statement shows the impact on the air quality and biodiversity of the surroundings, which are created by the extensive participation of people in the decision-making process for the execution of the project. The most affected group are the residential people of the locality of the project.
The project is occurring in Parramatta road to St. Peters, which includes six hectares of open space. As stated by Williamson (2021), several issues arise without the public participation in a big developmental project. The extensive participation hence reduces...
