Confronted with the greatest influx of refugees, Europe has demonstrated the arbitrary nature of its external borders. It recognized statistics asserting that Austria had a larger burden for every person than almost any European nation, but it defined stalling points like Lebanon and Cyprus as having an even higher burden (Siapera, 2019). The statement of Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert exemplifies that the initiatives of the European member states are conflicting in essence. With the increase in application fields from asylum seekers who do not meet the criteria of a refugee as defined by EU member states, the latter have been keen to devise an alternative strategy to asylum-seeker planning in which only those pre-defined as refugees must be allowed to enter the EU (Krzyżanowski et al., 2018).
