Submission By 11:55pm AEST/AEDT Sunday, Week 7 Weighting 30% Total Marks 100 marks Context  Undertaking self- assessment and reflection is critical element of becoming an effective leader.  This assessment will help you to identify the effective leadership traits, behaviours and approaches relevant to your leadership development.  Leadership is an important component of professional life – both the leadership of others and oneself. The development of your leadership development plan will assist your career progression, particularly, managing teams in hospitality. Instructions: This is an opportunity for students to further develop their understanding of what makes a leader effective by undertaking self- assessment, self-reflection and creating a practical personal Leadership Development Plan. HTL303 The Leadership Experience – Leadership Development Plan [15/11/2021] Page 2 of 5 To establish empirical benchmarks students are to undertake at least four (4) leadership self-assessment tests. Students may choose from any of the following leadership self- assessment tests which have been provided as part of the subject’s Pre-tutorial Activities: 1. 16 Personalities [ https://www.16personalities.com/ ] 2. What’s your Leadership Style? [http://www.leadershipiq.com/blogs/leadershipiq/36533569-quiz-whats-your- leadership-style# ] 3. Leadership Self-assessment quiz 1.1 [Chapter 1 of recommended text https://lesa.on.worldcat.org/oclc/1124616517 ] 4. The Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale [ http://personality-testing.info/tests/RSE.php ] 5. Team Roles Test (Belbin) [ https://www.123test.com/team-roles-test/ ] 6. Emotional Intelligence Test [https://globalleadershipfoundation.com/geit/eitest.html] 7. Cultural Intelligence Test [ https://commonpurpose.org/knowledge-hub-archive/all- articles/what-is-cultural-intelligence/cq-test/ ] The results/outcome of each of these are to be reviewed/analysed to determine what areas you could use for the development of your leadership skills. It is recommended that you focus on key leadership traits and characteristics and avoid broad general concepts of leadership. To do this, students are to first develop a personal SWOT matrix format to display the outcomes of the self-assessment and tests. However, ensure that all entries in the SWOT have demonstrated links to leadership theory from the course curriculum and the outcomes of the self-assessment tests undertaken. Then undertake a critical evaluation of the overall Leadership picture that the collective results represent. From here, students are to then develop a brief reflection on past leadership experiences either in their personal life, as student or internship/work. If the student has not had direct leadership experience, then reflect on self-leadership. This reflection should be linked to how these experiences may have impacted the current set of leadership skills (ie what experiences have positively contributed and what may have limited Leadership development thus far) From these two activities, students are to then identify three (3) leadership traits/characteristics for inclusion in their Leadership Development Plan. The Leadership Development Plan will include the three (3) leadership traits/characteristics you have identified, justifying why you picked these areas and then what you will do to develop these. This includes showing your timeframes, specific actions/activities, and measures of success. The Leadership Development Plan should be presented in a table to organise responses in a clear way that is easy to understand. 1. Objectives (what do you want to improve?) 2. Goals (what are the ways you are going to achieve the objectives? – there may be more than one goal for each objective) 3. How (what are the specific actions you plan to take to achieve each goal?) 4. When (when do you plan to complete each goal?) Note: this is a way of using the SMART approach – but you don’t need to follow the SMART approach literally ie. Smart, Measurable, Accurate etc). For this assessment, students are to use appendices to showcase the full results of your leadership analysis tests. These are not included in the word count and are not assessed as part of your report. HTL303 The Leadership Experience – Leadership Development Plan [15/11/2021] Page 3 of 5 When using Appendices (which is plural for Appendix), it is important to name each one Appendix 1, Appendix 2 etc and put them on separate pages. Then in the body of your report you can note the Appendix number so the reader can look at it if they want more information – for example: refer to Appendix 1 for more details. An appendix item is referenced (if required) the same as a normal referenced item. You must show that the contents of your report have been well researched and that all aspects of your Leadership Development Plan (especially the recommended actions/activities) are well supported by using at least 6 independent quality academic (peer reviewed journals and texts) and/or industry sources. Your paper should also demonstrate strong links to the Leadership theory that has been discussed in class. Students should avoid less credible sources such as Wikipedia, UK Essays and Slideshare, prezi.com and other sites which contain student-based content (assessments and/or powerpoint presentations). The Report should include, in this order: Torrens Assessment Cover Sheet (not included in word count) Table of Contents (not included in word count) Introduction- outlining the aims and purpose of the study - what the topic of the report is and briefly discussing what the reader will learn from reading the report. 1. Summary and Critical Evaluation of Self- assessment 1.1. Personal SWOT 1.2. Critical Evaluation 2. Reflection on Past Leadership Experiences 3. Leadership Development Plan (table format) Conclusion – A summary the key points that have been made in the body of the report Reference list (not included in word count) Appendices – displaying the full results of your 4 Leadership Self-assessment tests (not included in word count). Extra Instructions: This assessment activity is more than simply opinion based and hence, should make use of additional independent research, specifically relevant leadership and theory and models. The submission will be assessed according to the quality and depth of thought, relevance and how sufficiently you have applied critical thinking to the evaluation, reflection and plan components of the assessment. Presentation and layout are important and are assessed – this is not an essay, rather is a report. The report should be in a form and format that would be acceptable in the business context. Therefore, students are to make use of the recommended table of contents as well as visuals/images, additional sub-headings, tables, bullet points – aspects which will improve the readability and reduce the wordiness of the submission (Students will be penalised for submitting an essay format).
