Social workers communicate information in many ways, including writing. Your personal statement is the only writing sample required as part of your application. It will be used to assess your ability to write at the graduate level by addressing the topics in a cohesive, integrated essay, as well as your readiness for graduate education. Your personal statement should fully inform the committee about your view of yourself as a quality candidate for professional education. Care should be taken in its preparation. The narrative essay must be doubled-spaced, type written, and a maximum of three (3) pages long. Please answer the following questions. 1. Within the broad concentrations of Clinical Practice or Policy, Planning and Administration, discuss your current career interest and goal for your professional work. What experience have you had with oppressed populations (racial, ethnic, sexual orientation, persons with disabilities, etc.)? I still remember, initially when I started working as the social work profession and initiated my journey, I didn’t realize the impact that it can create in the society and how it has the prowess to touch different life. Truly, I did realise the relevance of this role and position until I actually started working on the ground. When I started the journey of my professional career, my vision was perhaps little vague and ground reality of a social worker were completely different. Indeed, it required some time and efforts from my mentors to help me get the clarity of thoughts and re-align with precise mission. For instance, I used to believe that social worker can be equated to a problem solver. Well, that could be partially true since it is one of the primary responsibilities being in that role but it is much broader in scope and deeper while scaling. Essentially, the key objectives of the professional social worker is to be perhaps being emotionally intelligent, unbiased, empathetic and uncritical. The duty of the social worker is not only to advocate for the population that are perhaps vulnerable and exposed.
