This requires a combination of verbal and written communications and a range of applied leadership skills. One of the foundational documents that helps “kick-off” the project is the Project Charter. Use your own style based on your critical thinking of what it means for you to lead a project. That will help you formulate your unique Project Charter. Instructions: 1. Read the case study provided by your lecturer. This will form the basis for your Project Charter, because you will assume that you are the project manager for this project. 2. a. Background to the Project
The background of the project revolves around the face lifting of a 350-year-old company. The innovative idea put forward by the two company officials has rewritten the traditional way of managing the client-agency relationshi
p in the success of a project. Also, it shows the position that the construction sector holds in the German economy. The company is a very diverse company with interests in a variety of industries this enabled them to grow and survive for this long duration. Now they are planning to make a headquarters in Germany that will function as their global headquarters and an employee restaurant too. They want to show the world their transition towards the information technology industry and why they are still relevant. This is a prestigious project for them. The new project will be led by Steven and Mark who both are part of the company itself and has is known for their stellar performance.
b. Reasons for the project
In a competing world, the concept of innovations has got its importance. The more innovative the products are the better sales and popularity a firm attains. The Merck decided on expanding their business and establishing new concepts so that they can bring in their signature in all the other fields (Elias 2016). Moreover, the construction sector, in general, is considered to be the large contributors to the world economy, also recent surveys show that this sector takes over almost all other industrial sectors. Innovation is an essential part of the business and the innovation needs to be facilitated in the right manner. This is essential for the business to function in the right manner and also to sustain in the industry for a long time. However, no matter what comes way, an organization is required to follow the sustainable business practice. This is an essential part that needs to be considered by every organization for the sake of survival in the business for a longer time. This is a prestigious project for Merck as they intend to start the 350th-anniversary celebrations by moving into this new headquarters. They want to show the world how it is still possible for such an old company to still survive by timely transition and diversification to different industries. And right now by building this new HQ, they will be able to show their latest transition into the IT industry. Other reasons for the company to undertake this project as they realized how the construction and architecture of their work building seriously affected their projects directly and indirectly. The work community, customers, and the partners felt a strong need to have a cultural transformation, so the company could convey the transformative message through and by their innovative products, Hence One Global Headquarters(OGHQ) program was initiated in 2014. Also, low productivity performance in constructions with big variations between countries and subsectors leading to poor project management, execution, inefficient skills, inadequate design processes and underinvestment in R&D and innovation were the additional reasons for the project (Milosevic et al 2010)
c. Project Objectives
The main objective of the project is to complete the building of the innovation centre and the employee restaurant before the starting of the 350th year celebrations in the most efficient way by collaborating with the right people at the right time and to make the least environmental impact and also to create an architectural marvel. Secondary objectives of the OGHQ project was to redefine the architecture of their innovation centre. Apart from this, Steven and Mark (company heads) had few points in their minds. They are:
· Build a mutual understanding of technical and qualitative building requirements
· Familiarize bidders with the planning content of the previous design work as well as its limits and challenges.
· Clarifications of technical issues and time schedules for both sides.
