Module 7 Final Challenge: Craft a structured data story with a point of view that requires action (60 points) and record yourself telling the story as if you were presenting to an executive audience as one of many items on an agenda (20 points). Review the videos of two other students as if you were responsible for making decisions based on the findings and as if you were responsible for coaching the presenter on how to improve their data story. Provide feedback that demonstrates mastery of the concepts learned in this course (20 points). Dataset to use for Module 7 assignment (located in Canvas): M4_MidTermChallenge_Bookshop Assignment Overview Given that you have already performed exploratory analysis on this data set, summarized the insights, and built a dashboard, 70- 80% of the heavy lifting is done. This assignment is about polish, refinement, and presentation. You are certainly welcome to harvest new insights, but the focus should be on developing a point of view, helping stakeholders emotionally invest in your findings so they take action, and solidifying your learning by providing feedback to other students (see → do → teach). • Because this is the last assignment of the course, late assignments will not be accepted and no extensions will be granted. • Pay attention to submission requirements, including how you save your file. 10 points will be deducted from the assignment if your files are not named as directed in the submission requirements. • This assignment has two deadlines. Your slides & video presentation are due by 11:59 pm CT on Friday of Module 8. 2 Peer feedback submissions are due by 11:59 pm CT on Sunday of Module 8. Assignment Requirements 1. In previous assignments, you were asked to identify questions you might want to answer in your exploratory analysis. For this assignment, craft a slide that outlines the decisions you are encouraging the executive team to make and actions to be taken because of your findings and what is at stake (10 points). • Since we don’t have actual business context behind why this dataset was originally pulled together, we may have to make assumptions about what’s at stake and why. Resource: DataStory book summary posted in Module 7 content section. 2. Refine your slides from the mid-term into a structured data story (50 points) • You’ve had additional time with the data set, harvested new insights while building your dashboard and had additional learning from the content in post-mid term modules. When I grade the slides from your final challenge, I will review them side-by-side with your mid-term slides. I should see clear improvement in your use of pre-attentive attributes, avoidance of chart clutter, proper use of contrast, consistent formatting, clean slide backgrounds, etc. • Your slides should not be simply a collection of visuals and insights. Instead, they should be a clear journey toward the decisions and actions outlined in requirement 1. Either you are leading with the actions you want taken then following with an ordered rationale or you’re building your case one concept at a time with a natural ending at the recommendations. • Though you will be communicating your data story in a video, the slides need to stand on their own. We have talked about this concept in lectures where somebody might not be attending the meeting, so your slides need to communicate the important messages and put them in context. Though not required for this assignment, it is not uncommon for the deck used in a live presentation to be slightly different, simplified, from the PDF everyone receives as a handout or pre-read. Peer reviews, as outlined below, will only be based on the slides, not the video. Resources: Resonate book summary posted in Module 7 content section & all content form Module 6. If you simply resubmit the mid-term slides, you will fail this assignment 3. Record a video of you navigating your slides and telling your data story (20 points) • Videos should be recorded in Zoom and uploaded as an mp4 to Canvas i. I tested with Zoom on my desktop and the mp4 automatically saved in a Zoom folder. ii. Resource for recording Zoom meetings: https://www.diyvideostudio.com/how-to-convert-a-zoom-recording- to-an-mp4-video-file/ • Video should be no more than 10 minutes in length. • Think of the video as if you were delivering your story to an executive audience that has other things on the agenda for the day. i. Use presentation mode in PowerPoint ii. Get to the point quickly iii. Don’t get hung up on methodology, talk to me about the findings, why they matter, and what the executive team should do about them. iv. Don’t just read the words on the slide, tell me a story. Help me invest emotionally. https://www.diyvideostudio.com/how-to-convert-a-zoom-recording-to-an-mp4-video-file/ https://www.diyvideostudio.com/how-to-convert-a-zoom-recording-to-an-mp4-video-file/ 4. Provide feedback to peers on their slides and video presentations (20 points) • Complete peer feedback for 2 students and submit by 11:59 pm CT on Sunday, end of Module 8 • You will be graded on the value of the feedback you submit to your peers. Your grade will not be impacted by what your peers say about your project. I want to see that you understand the concepts discussed in this class. It is one thing to apply the concepts in your own work, it’s another to spot them and communicate improvement ideas to others. • Students will only be reviewing the slides, not the video presentation. • Feedback is to be balanced. Highlight what you feel was done well and what you might have done differently to have the story resonate more, communicate the findings more clearly, be more visually appealing, etc. • I will provide your submitted feedback to students your reviewed, so be professional. • Upload your peer reviews to Canvas in the same place you submit your own work. Submission Requirements 1. PDF of Final Data Story (Friday, Module 8) • File Name: FirstName_LastName_M7Story.pdf 2. PDF Resubmission of Mid-Term (Friday, Module 8) • FirstName_LastName_M4MidTerm_InsightsSummary.pdf 3. Zoom presentation (Friday, Module 8) • File Name: FirstName_LastName_M8Presentation.mp4 • File must be submitted as an mp4 4. PDF of Peer Reviews (Sunday, Module 8) • File Name: ReviewerFirstName_ReviewerLastName_M7Feedback_PeerLastName Module 8 Final Challenge Peer Review Instructions: 1. Provide feedback to peers on their slides and video presentations (20 points towards your final project) • Use the template on page 2 of this document to provide constructive feedback on 2 student’s final projects as assigned by your instructor. • Assigned projects to review will appear in Canvas after the final project deadline has passed. • Complete peer feedback forms for 2 students and submit by 11:59 pm CT on Saturday, July 25. • You will be graded on the value of the feedback you submit to your peers, 20 points towards your grade on the project, so be thorough and reference materials learned in class for full credit. Providing thoughtful feedback is how you demonstrate true mastery of the principles discussed in this class. It is one thing to apply the concepts in your own work, it is another to spot them and communicate improvement ideas to others. • Your grade will not be impacted by what your peers say about your project on the value of the feedback you give to others. • Students will only be reviewing the slides, not the video presentation. This is a visualization class; the slides should stand on their own without having to have the context from a video presentation. • Feedback is expected on a minimum of 5 slides or all slides if there are 5 or less in the presentation. Title page, Executive Summary, Key Decisions Summary, and Appendix do not count toward the 5 slides requiring feedback. Focus your feedback on the visualization slides.
