1. Name some factors that are responsible for the rise of population health.
Population health is a more holistic approach which is focusing on preventing the illness rather than treating it. It integrates all those aspects that influence the people’s wellbeing. According to Kindi
g and Stoddart (2003), population health is defined as “the health outcomes of a group of individuals, including the distribution of such outcomes within the group”.
Some factors that are responsible for the rise of population health are categorized as follows.
· Health care system
· Policy making
· Individual behavior
· Social and physical environment
· Biological impact or genetics
· Health care system: It includes the accessibility to the health care. For example those who don’t may not attend the preventive care and there can be delay in accessing the medical treatment.
· Policy making: Rules or policies at local or national level have great impact on population health. For example, more taxes on alcohol can reduce the consumption of alcohol by individuals, its higher cost apparently reduce the chances of substance use.
· Individual behavior: It includes diet, exercise, substance use, personal hygiene practices etc. For example, if a person quit smoking, risk of lung cancer is reduced.
· Social and Physical environment: the social environment includes economic status, education, job, interaction with people, exposure to media, crime, violation etc and physical environment consists of surrounding environment, infrastructure, exposure to hazardous chemicals, physical disabilities etc. For example, who work in a coal mine has a risk of developing pulmonary diseases like coal worker’s pneumoconiosis, COPD etc.
· Biological impact or Genetics: This affects specific group of population and not all. For example, the child inherits cystic fibrosis when both parents carry the gene for cystic fibrosis.
    Individual and population health is determined by the interrelation among these factors.
2. Why is population health so important in managing Covid-19 and give some examples of why it has made a difference?
COVID-19 pandemic has huge impact on day to day life of people world wide. It has affected social and economic life and also physical and psychological health of many people. The public health concept of one to approach focus on clinically diagnosed individuals. But the family and friends of the diagnosed people experience tremendous psychological distress but which will go undiagnosed. It will have negative impact on the population health in a long run. Therefore to bring these people who also need care and treatment in front, preventive and holistic approach of population health plays important role in managing health care facility available.
