My Meal My Story

In this course you’ve learned a lot about how food reflects culture and identity. To capture your learning, you will use your creativity to design a dish or a baked good and infuse it with as much unique characteristics from your own life as possible. Here is how:

Design your dish or baked item by making mindful decisions regarding some or all of the following:

    • Your selected ingredients - How do these ingredients relate to your unique story as a person and as a cook?

    • Sourcing of the ingredients - Where do these ingredients come from? Is that significant? If yes, what is the significance? If not, why? Maybe you should choose something that is significant instead!

    • Techniques and methods applied - Is this simple or difficult to prepare? Do the techniques relate to you uniquely? Why did you design a dish with these techniques?

    • Cultural significance of the dish - Is this related to a culture that you identify with? Which culture is that? Were you born into this culture or did you chose it for yourself? Remember culture is not always where you were born, it can also be who you choose to be and what you choose to value.

    • Aesthetic decisions - What will this dish or baked good look like? Are there important shapes or colours? Will it be served on a specific kind of plate or bowl that has a significance?

This is an exercise in creativity, storytelling, and intentionality. What I want to see is an understanding that every single aspect of a plate of food can be significant. I want you to think beyond nutrition and consider culture and values and emotions.

Your Submission should include:

  • The recipe and description of your dish using a clear and easy to understand format.

  • An explanation of all of the significances of your recipe and design decisions using the guiding questions above. You should not feel limited to the above questions, but you should try to address all of them.
