Communication is integral part of everyday lives. Everyone use communication in everything. Although effective communication never guarantees success, absence generally resolves the problem. Few challenges of having diverse workforce are to understand how to easily create a comprehensive work environment where employees can easily reach their full potential. It is manage
r’s responsibility to affirmatively identify where the language as well as cultural differences in workplace can be adapted moreover where they cannot adapt. In current diverse workforce, employers are likely to let employees work for people who don't understand the language. Language barriers might make it very difficult to guide, explain the expectations, or provide good performance feedback or review to those who cannot communicate efficiently or effectively. This research essay is about how multi-national companies and the issue they face in regards to language and how to overcome Language Barrier at workplace.
Importance of the issues
Today's diverse workforce provides many challenges for HR professionals in multinational companies or organizations. A challenge that is not often expressed is the challenge of having a verbal communication with a worker who’s English is a second language. On the one hand, many extremely skilled as well as valuable employees struggle to cope with a pronunciation challenges facing American English. Several sounds in the language do not exist in their native language, leading to pronunciations that are not understood by ordinary listeners. The idioms, expressions and abbreviation use every day are often incomprehensible to foreign-born employees. Mastering English verb tenses is usually incomplete and schedules and deadlines may be affected. Conversely, among foreign-born colleagues and contractors, it is difficult for English-speaking staff to interpret pronunciation, syllable pressure and rhythm of spoken English. Fortunately, these challenges have practical solutions. Language skills learning and training by skilled experts or professionals can establish a bridge of communication that enables foreign-born employees to reach their overall potential.
Problems caused by language barriers in the workplace
Language barriers can lead to complications in the workplace between employers/managers and employees, leading to performance problems. Customers may be misled by employees or have obvious errors, and may even result in loss of customers in certain circumstances. Let's see what else might go wrong: Good workers may not be able to follow instructions, make mistakes or fail to reach their full potential. Disobedient employees may pretend not to understand just to avoid doing tasks or responding to any negative feedback. Failure to communicate can compromise workplace harmony, teamwork can become difficult, and the work environment can be directly affected. When staff members are unable to communicate with each other, collaboration and knowledge sharing between them becomes difficult. They are unable to exchange opinions or ideas, leading to tension, shaking, bad results and consumption.
How to overcome language barriers
Who should change and learn a new way of communicating when language becomes a communication barrier - manager or employee? This is the dilemma facing a diverse workplace in the United States. It is easier than ever to communicate in another language because of the resources provided by the Internet. Let's take a look at how we use various solutions to overcome language barriers to overcome language barriers: use any free resources on the web to get all relevant documentation, but bilinguals verify the accuracy of the translation to achieve the desired meaning. No loss or misinterpretation. Provide instructions or provide feedback by using an interpreter to communicate your text in the language of your employees. Provide all interactions in a slow, clear language and repeat as necessary. Language is not necessarily the only way to communicate things. Use drawings, logos, cue cards, gestures, actual presentations, and even videos of the performance and actions required by workers. Provide immigration advice for long-term language-based training in key workplaces, especially in the key communication elements your business needs. This may include your work terms, phrases, warnings and basic instructions. Acceptors can be encouraged to further improve their skills. Keep the language simple and use words with fewer syllables and no complexity. Avoid using idioms and metaphors when discussing office affairs - or explain them again in simple English. Avoid sending emails and communicating face to face. If you are traveling, please use video chat. Express emotions, smile a lot, and usually express your emotions in a common language that transcends words. Avoid managing terminology and words such as “dynamic” or “benchmarks” or abbreviations that may confuse non-native speakers. It is stipulated that after every effort to communicate importantly, workers explain their understanding of content and content in their own language (Mullany, 2011).
