Submission Due by 11:55pm AEST Sunday end of Module 8. Weighting 30% Total Marks 100 marks Task Summary Individually, select a recent technology development (in the last 10 years) and discuss how an aspect of this technology may have undermined its social, global or cultural impact. Then, discuss possible alternative solutions to address these concerns. This report should be 2000 words in length, a maximum of 200 words (10%) above or below. This assessment is preparation for Assessment 3, which involves fully developing or concepting one of the solutions you propose as part of this assessment. Please refer to the Task Instructions for details on how to complete this task. HCD402_Human Centred Design_Assessment_2_Brief_Report_Module Due 8 Page 2 of 9 Context All developed technologies come with inherent side effects. Whether recent developments - such as the internet, mobile phones, or artificial intelligence - or older creations - such as the internal combustion engine (ICE), many often cause unintended consequences. Fossil fuel usage alongside ICEs have contributed to widespread warming of our planet, and mobile phone introduction has led to fundamental changes in how society communicates and receives information. This Proposed Solution Report aims to assess your understanding of the side effects of your chosen technology. A further aim is to determine your ability to evaluate, break down and categorise these side effects. Alongside your chosen technology and referenced resources, you will ideally demonstrate your understanding of these complex issues. Some examples of topics you could cover include:  The development of the aeroplane and its ability to connect individuals globally, but also its ability to cause health or safety issues through rapid spread of illness.  The development of the Internet and its ability to connect individuals globally, and the issues it can cause - in particular with areas of illegal or dangerous activities.  The development of firewalling technology in conjunction with the Internet, and how it is used to block access to parts of the internet in different regions. The topic chosen should be addressed and evaluated in detail, and an examination of the severity level of the flow-on effects documented. It should also propose solutions to the flow-on effects caused by the technology’s implementation. Note that the result of the report can highlight existing solutions that exist, but should go further in presenting additional solutions. Please note: Keep in mind the solutions you discuss at the end of your report may become further developed or explained as part of assessment 3. HCD402_Human Centred Design_Assessment_2_Brief_Report_Module Due 8 Page 3 of 9 Task Instructions This assessment requires you to investigate a technology developed in the past 10 years, and determine how an aspect of that technology has undermined its social, global or cultural impact. As part of this report, you will also discuss possible solutions. As part of the analysis component, you will write a report that focuses on the following areas:  The development of the technology, and the main effects. o Did the technology, while in development, inspire anything else before release? o Was it an easy development process, or perhaps more ethically complicated?  The release of the technology, and the immediate ‘undermining’ effect its release may have had. o How quickly did society identify the issues with the technology? o How long did issues take to appear?  Long-term undermining effects. o How long did these take to appear? o How ingrained are they in society now? o What long-term adjustments or changes occurred? o Were there restrictions implemented for the technology’s usage or future development? Referencing Referencing is essential for this assignment. A minimum of 10-12 references is required for this, including at least eight academic sources. Development of Internet
The world has witnessed a revolution in World Wide Web since the incept
ion (Lyytinen, 2003) and growth of the internet. The internet has revolutionized (NAS, 2020) the way in which information access and retrieval is perceived today. Over the last few decades, the projects based on computer networking evolved with various application programs like the web browsers through the use of communication protocols defining prototype formats and network message formats. The internet was built over telephone networks which are still to some extent, the fundamental underlying infrastructure for this technology.
The initial concept of data traffic transfers inspired the structuring of the internet over telecommunications. The telephone networks used voice traffic and computers needed to transfer data. A telecommunication connection was maintained for the duration of a call while computers needed to relay data in bursts which would require combining several calls on the same transmission path. The idea was further developed using packet switching networks and a network architecture was developed for transmitting packet through the network, controlled by Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) set in place in 1960s. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) came into existence in 1970s using which users could transfer file between two systems using Telnet. This capability inspired many new fields of interest within file transmission activity such as network-connected file systems and client-server connection. FTP and Email innovations led researchers who were geographically distanced from each other to share research and results in an effective manner. These initial network applications proved to be substantially valuable to computer scientists as well as scholars for further development and broadening the scope of networking.
Internet, as the word signifies is an interconnection of multiple networks that enables one computer user over one network to communicate with another computer user located far away. The work of researchers on large-scale packet switching was highly supported at DARPA which offered it initially, after TCP/IP and FTP came into existence, the network size started increasing through two major activities- Integration of networks with operating systems and construction of Local Area Networks (LAN). Following the existence of these phenomena, the scope of the internet widened boundaries to international utilization and eventually to commercialization. Internet is extensively established and used as a dominant means of internetworking today.
The release of the internet technology has inspired numerous companies and individuals to incorporate it into their businesses. Billions of dollars are generated through the use of this technology and its vast range of applications. E-commerce is an evident example of business which is completely based on the internet technology and is raising bars in growing the economies exponentially.
Release of the Internet
The release of the Internet took place in the form of World Wide Web in late 80s. Scientist Tim Berners-Lee linked hyper-text documents within information system which could be accessed from any computer over the network. The creator initially proposed to share information around the world independent of the hardware. CERN expanded the proposal into a potential document of World Wide Web connected through hypertext links. The concept was initially names as The Information Mesh and The Mine of Information which deduced to the Web in 1990. World Wide Web was first Web browser software developed by Berners-Lee and launched by NeXT. A working prototype was developed at CERN by him later that year. The technology went live to the world in August 1991 where Berners-Lee posted first public webpage at http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html. A snapshot of a later version of this page is shown below.
CERN made the World Wide Web free for all in 1991. This offering contributed to the revolutionary technology that we live in today. With numerous browser applications coming into existence, Mosaic made a difference which was responsible for the inspiration to...
