Acids and Bases
(Assignment for May 6 and 7, 2021)
Part 1: Comprehension Questions
1. How did the
Arrhenius definition fail to explain the behavior of bases?
Ans: This theory is applicable only in case of aqueous solution and not in terms of substance themselves. This theory is limited to bases which has formula of BOH in bases and hence can only tell about bases like NaOH, KOH, NH4OH etc. This definition fails to explain the bases which do not have the formula of BOH in them and hence it is a limitation.

2. Compare and contrast the Arrhenius, Bronsted-Lowry, and Lewis definitions of acids and bases. How are they similar? How do they differ?
Ans: As per Arrhenius an acid is a substance which increase the concentration of hydrogen ion in an aqueous solution and a base is a substance which increases the concentration of hydroxide ion in the aqueous solution.
As per Bronsted-Lowry acids are...
