Write a Financial Analysis Report using an essay structure to interpret a company’s most recent annual report. Assessment Description Students will write a Financial Analysis Report for a stakeholder (external investor or internal manager) that interprets the annual report of an Australian company. The Report will clearly state recommendations about the company’s suitability for share investment or internal management. The company should be listed on the ASX. Students will be assessed on the thoroughness of the financial analysis. Thoroughness requires a logical justification of why financial and non-financial performance indicators are included in the analysis. The analysis will be formally written to meet the expectations of a stakeholder. The report is limited to 1000 words, plus or minus 10%, excluding title page and bibliography. Assessment Instructions Select a company that is currently listed on the ASX. Write a Financial Analysis Report that interprets the company’s most recent annual report. This report will need to be written for a stakeholder (external investor or internal manager). Research additional information beyond the annual report about the company’s performance. Use the group financial results if the annual report presents financial results for the group and parent company. Justify the selection of financial and non-financial performance indicators that are relevant for evaluating the company’s financial performance. Use a formal language and structure of your report. It provides a background of the company chosen, the main business activities and the purpose of the Financial Analysis Report. Analysis Analysis will present and discuss the financial results and performance indicators extracted from the company’s annual report. A concise commentary should explain the significant changes in the financial results. Interpretation The interpretation should be approximately 70% of total word count. Interpret the causes of the changes in the company’s financial performance. Justify the inclusion of financial and non-financial performance indicators in the Financial Analysis Report. Research additional non-financial performance indicators from a wider range of sources beyond the company’s own publications. Discuss the company’s business activities and the financial implications of the activities. Apply financial and non-financial performance indicators to explain trends and issues in the company’s financial results. Conclusion The conclusion should be approximately 20% of total word count. State a clear recommendation that addresses the decision-making needs of a stakeholder. For example, recommend a decision to invest or not invest in the company if the Report is written for a potential shareholder. Or, recommend a decision to improve the financial performance of the company if the Report is written for an internal manager. Justify recommendations by explaining how it will meet the needs of the stakeholder. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Beacon Lighting Group Ltd. is an ASX listed company that is well-known as a retailer of lighting, ceiling fans, and light globes offering a variety of products, services, and knowledge to its customers. It was
first established in 1967 and has its headquarters in Mulgrave, Australia. At the end of FY20, the company had 108 company stores and 3 franchised stores present in all the states & territories in Australia. Also, as an emerging business, it was seen that it has sales offices in Hong Kong, Germany, the United States with a support office in China. The financial analysis report is prepared to get an overview of the financial and non-financial results and provide a decision to the investors whether to invest in the company or not.
INTRODUCTION
The company prepared its annual report for the year ended 2020 containing the consolidated financial statements of the entity Beacon Lighting Group Company and its subsidiaries. Though the whole of business was affected due to pandemic Covid-19, it did not impact the financial results of the company for the FY2020. It took extra safety measures, restrictions, social distancing, etc. as a result of which it remained opened throughout 2020. There was a significant growth in sales observed as the customers were spending time educating and working at home. There were many performances and financial indicators like net profit, sales, etc. which represented the financial performance which is discussed below.
FINANCIAL RESULTS (ANALYSIS)
The sales of Beacon were observed to be $252,224m which has increased by around 2.6% as compared to FY2019. The gross profit ratio has increased by 2.6% which was reported to be $161,197 as compared to $157,158m in last year. The operating expenses of Beacon reduced by around 16.8%, i.e. it reduced from $129,173m (FY19) to $107,501 (FY20). The net profit increased by around 38.5% as it increased by around $6,181m (22,225-16,044) as compared to FY19. The company also recorded online sales of $16.2m in Australia which represented around 50.2% growth. The company has also declared an annual dividend of 5.00 cents per share for FY 2020 which was more than 4.55 as declared in FY19.
The financial position of the company was observed to be very strong even in the difficult times of pandemic Covid-19. It sold out one of its centers in December 2019 which helped Beacon Lighting to reduce its debts and have a strong cash position of $14.5 million at the end of FY20. The inventories and receivables also declined in 2020 which indicated a positive cash inflow in the company. Also, there was a decline in fixed assets as it sold one of its distribution centers. It has thus shown a positive financial performance and results during the FY2020.
RATIO ANALYSIS (INTERPRETATION)
As the report is prepared for the investors, they will be concerned about the profitability and liquidity ratios of the company. Some of these ratios are discussed below which will help the investors to make decisions whether to invest or not.
