Introduction
In the modern scenario, ethical is of prime importance in business. The investors prefer organisation that follow ethical practices. However, organisation tend to adopt unethical practices for short-term benefits. At the end, unethical practices have negative consequences. Managers tend to ignore the big picture for short-term benefits and have to suffer at the end. Ethical theories have been proposed by various individuals to guide the professionals in their approach. Professionals have to face ethical dilemma and it is the time managers tend to take unethical decisions.
Discussion of the Case
The case study deals with the use of personal data of users of Facebook for marketing decisions. A blog of Facebook named People Insights had published a post that was named “What mends a broken heart”. The data was regarding the posts of people who indicated on Facebook that they went through a breakup. Analytical tools were used to analyse the response of individuals to breakup (Raicu, 2017). The online behaviours of people of Poland, Netherlands, United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates were analysed to recommend experiences, shopping items to such individuals.
Marketing managers for their products or services targeted such individuals. The ethical issue in this case is the use of personal data for growth of business. The personal reactions of individuals is analysed to predict the timing of breakup and recommend products or experiences to cope up with that. The utility here can be referred to as the well-being. The action that lead to well-being of greatest number of people will be considered as the best action. Even if the outcomes requires false statement, the path should be taken as it will lead to well-being of large number of people. Public benefits are given more priority over individual priority.
If the Utilitarianism theory is applied in the case study, there will be no ethical dilemma. The data, which is collected from social activities of people, is being collected for healing the individuals who have gone through breakup. It will provide them a way to heal themselves in an effective manner. Various organisation will also be benefited, as they will be able to sell their products or services to the individuals. They will be able to target their customers in an effective manner. Therefore, according to Raicu (2017), it...
