Ocean water rings, or eddies, form when western boundary currents form looping meanders that pinch off from the main current to form isolated and persistent rotating warm-core and cold-core bodies of water. Their presence is evidenced by differences between their surface temperatures and the temperatures of the waters surrounding them. The eddies are labeled as “W” (warm) if their centers are warmer relative to surrounding waters or “C” (cold) if their centers are colder, with two numbers for the year (i.e., 19 for 2019), followed by numbers indicating the sequence of their initial appearance for the year. On the Gulf Stream analysis, five oval-shaped warm eddies appear in Figure 10A-5. In particular, one located at approximately 39°N, 67.5°W is labeled “W1925.” The SST of ______°F reported in the ring is several degrees warmer than much surface water surrounding it.
