On Page 11 of your Text, you will find the first set of Exercises that we are going to complete. The book indicates you use IPython, however, Jupyter notebook has an extension that will convert these files, so no need to download another tool. If you chose not to download Anaconda, you can do these exercises in whatever Python distributor you prefer, but there are some advantages to reviewing the files created by the author of our book.

Make sure you document your code so your instructor understands your thought and logic process.

Complete the following exercises:

  • Page 11: 1-1 (In the repository you downloaded, you should find a file named chap01ex.ipynb, which is an IPython notebook. You can launch IPython notebook from the command line…)

  • Page 11: 1-2 (Create a file named chap01ex.py and write code that reads the respondent file, 2002FemResp.dat.gz. You might want to start with a copy of nsfg.py and modify it…)

  • Page 25: 2-1 (Based on the results in this chapter, suppose you were asked to summarize what you learned about whether first babies arrive late…)

  • Page 25: 2-4 (Using the variable totalwgt_lb, investigate whether first babies are lighter or heavier than others…)

Make sure you practice each exercise, as your term project will build on top of the exercises in each chapter.
