What does it mean to be a virtual leader? Analyze the skills needed to be an effective virtual leader and research the type of culture required to successfully support and lead a virtual workforce. As mentioned by Newman, Ford and Marshall (2020) communication is virtual setup is different from traditional brick mortar offices. It has to be clear and precise due to geographical dispersion and there are high chances of misunderstandings and delays due to that.
Leadership:
As a virtual leader, one has to adopt technique, which can be an efficient substitution of leadership. As mentioned by Kreamer, Stock and Rogelberg (2021), while working in person it is easy to convey messages and deadlines but in virtual mode expectations from assignments need to be defined.
Organizational Performance:
The parameters to measure organizational performance are different as virtual teams are working round the clock and presence of effective leader communication is a challenge.
Leader has to take up the task of integration of effective collaboration and communication tools so that technology can be used as enhanced mode of interaction between virtual teams. He has the responsibility of maintaining high motivation and enthusiasm levels as it affects the perception of team towards performance.
According to Bhimani et al. (2021), the psychological safety of employees needs to be ensured by the leader so that resiliency and safe work environment can be fostered in virtual setup. Apart from this, the non-formal interaction needs to be initiated to enhance support, interpersonal relationships and provide clear directions.
Pandemic has thrown a new challenge on leaders to modify their style according to virtual and hybrid system so that managing virtual teams can be effective. The most prominent skills, which are in demand for a virtual leader, are:
(i) Communication skills as structured meeting, clear and concise directions and use of collaboration techniques and tools are important to use
(ii) Empathy is crucial because during virtual meeting it is required to pay attention to verbal and non-verbal cues and communicate accordingly.
(iii) Developing the ability of emotional intelligence so that navigation through challenges and demanding time will not affect interpersonal relationships
(iv) Setting expectations and targets for performance should be realistic and positive feedback should be conveyed for improvements.
