Introduction
The organization that is being
discussed is the major restaurant and fast food chain that is McDonald’s. The company, which is American fast-food and restaurant chain is one that is frequented by millions of people on a daily basis. It has however, been hit by a lot of scandal as well. Their operational strategy is known to be one of the best in the world.
The organization has become the largest fast-food chain in the world and is present in over 120 countries. The reason for choosing this organization is mainly because the strategies that they are use are available for research online. The organizational strategy that they use has been specially created for McDonald’s by the former owner of the company, Ray Kroc. Thus, their organizational strategy is extremely different from the ones that have been used anywhere else. The relationship that the author of this assignment has with the organization is that that their friends in the US are working for the organization and that the author frequents the restaurant on a regular basis.
Organizational overview
McDonald’s is one of the largest fast-food chains in the world. It is second-largest in terms of number of locations and the largest in terms of revenue. The company has restaurants or franchises in around 120 countries in the world. They serve almost 69 million customers daily. The revenue for the company in 2017 was estimated to be $22.8 billion (Moore, et al, 2017).
It was started in 1940 by Richard and Maurice McDonald. Soon though, Ray Kroc, who was a franchisee businessman for the company brought their shares and started the company all on his own. The company mainly uses the products beef, milk, chicken and various vegetables and fruits in their options. McDonald’s in the USA mainly look at the beef burgers and chicken nuggets, while many of the McDonald’s in other countries offer options that are vegetarian (Wood & krispal- Viitai, 2017).
Most products are offered on an “eat-in” where the customers are allowed to eat their food inside the restaurant or “take-out’ where the customer can pack their food up and eat it where they wish too. They also have the concept of “drive-in” where the customers can drive into the counter, place their order and receive it in their car. They may choose to drive and eat or have areas where they can park their cars in the premises of the restaurant and have their food.
The company offers food that is filling and easy on the pocket as well. The food is prepared and delivered quickly, so it is a hit amongst those who are working or do not have much time to spare for lunch.
Organizational Strategy
The organization follows the lean model and the “Think global, Act Local” strategy.
Lean Management Strategy
The lean management strategy aims to look at serving the customer with minimum wastage. The concept looks at maximizing the service that is given to the customer by minimizing the waste that is produced. The waste can in terms of resources or on the basis of time as well. In this regard, McDonald’s has stopped preparation of the food in advance in the event of a rush. This means that in case there is no rush, then there is no food that goes to waste. The organization has also started to use the cooking oil that is left over to fuel trucks (Hansen, et al, 2017). This can help reduce the waste of the cooking oil and saves them the cost of the fuel as well. The customer however, is given utmost importance to in the restaurant and there have been many cases of disputes that have been filed over this. An example of this would be when the organization revealed that their French fries and part of beef in them. Many vegetarian, Hindus and Sikhs sued the company over this and millions of dollars had to be given to the customers as part of the settlement process (Pradhan, 2018).
Think Global, Act Local Strategy
The other strategy that is used is “Think Global, Act Local.” This can be achieved by adapting to local cultures when opening a franchisee in another country. For example, in India, where religious laws prohibit the consumption of beef, the organization has launched the Mac, called the “Maharaja Mac” with either chicken or fish fillings. There is also a large number of vegetarians in the...
