Microsoft Word - Document11 Module 5: Leadership, Power, Conflict, and Negotiation Leadership Style What kind of a leader are you? There are several free assessments online, but the one I recommend was created by Donald Clark, M.A. Take the 20-question Leadership Self- Assessment Questionnaire, and record your thoughts on it in your Learning Journal. The Importance of Listening to Leading Stanley McCrystal is a decorated Army veteran and has been a leader of thousands of people. One of the keys to his leadership style is listening to people. Watch this Ted Talk by McCrystal to learn about his approach. What Inspires You to Take Action? Can something a leader does (or does NOT do) make a difference in whether or not you act? Leadership expert Simon Sinek argues that great leaders can inspire you to act and shares examples from Apple, the Wright brothers and more in the video below. Big 5 Model of Personality Traits When we show up to the present moment with all of our senses, we invite the world to fill us with joy. The pains of the past are behind us. The future has yet to unfold. But the now is full of beauty simply waiting for our attention. What makes your personality different from those around you? The Big 5 Model helps us understand the five primary personality traits. Watch this short video for a description of these five traits, and then take the 60-question assessment if you'd like to learn more about your own personality. Reacting to Conflict When you're faced with conflict, how do you react? For me, it depends if I am at work or with my family. Watch this short video about conflict modes. Which depicts you the best? Learning Journal In your Learning Journal, reflect on at least three of the questions or topics below  If you have participated in leadership development programs, how effective did you find them in (a) teaching you techniques and (b) giving you practical strategies you could use? What could they do better?  According to the Leadership Self-Assessment Questionnaire, what kind of leader are you. Do you agree or disagree with your assessment? Why  Watch Stanley McChrystal's video where he discusses his thoughts on the relationship of listening and leading. How important do you believe listening is to being an effective leader?. Why?  Take the 60-question assessment to learn more about your own personality. What are your reactions to the results of this assessment?  Of the five ways to react to conflict as described in the Thomas Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, which is the one that best describes your reactions in the workplace? Give at least one example.  Write and answer your own question about a topic discussed in this module.  References  Clark, D. (2015, October 15). Leadership Self-Assessment Questionnaire. As I became an adult, I was told that I needed to "be more serious." But what kind of impact does creativity have on corporate culture? Design leader Catherine Courage discusses this topic in her TedxKyoto talk "Igniting creativity to transform corporate culture." Culture as Competitive Advantage Delta Airlines' Senior Vice President of In-Flight Service Joanne Smith says "The key to organizational advancement is unlocking your ability to innovate, improve and perform over the long term. The key is culture." Too Many Rules Years ago, I worked as a leader in a Fortune 500 consumer packaged goods corporation, after spending some time in a ten-person company. It was the first giant organization I had been a part of, and I discovered that decision making in this company was methodical and slow. There seemed to be rules everywhere, from how departments could communicate with each other, what color paper memos had to be printed on (seriously) and the exact square footage of offices, depending on your position within the company. To say that this was a rude awakening to me, after working in an entrepreneurial environment, would be understating things. Management consultant Yves Morieux discusses the impact of rules on getting things done in his TED talk. Yves Morieux: How too many rules at work keep you from getting things done Modern work -- from waiting tables to crunching numbers to designing products -- is about solving brand-new problems every day, flexibly and collaboratively. But as Yves Morieux shows in this insightful talk, too often, an overload of rules, processes and metrics keeps us from doing our best work together. Learning Journal In your Learning Journal, reflect on at least three of the questions or topics below  Would you consider your workplace one in which creativity is encouraged? What kind of impact does this have on your company's corporate culture? (See Catherine Courage's TED Talk.)  Using terminology from Chapter 16, how would you describe your company's corporate culture?  After watching the TED Talk by Yves Morieux, what is your take on the impact of workplace rules on getting things done?  Thinking about Joanne Smith's TED Talk, how can corporate culture be considered a competitive advantage?  Discuss boundary spanning in organizations and between organizations.  If you've worked for a virtual organization and a "traditional" organization, how would you compare the two?  How does national culture affect what happens when an organizational culture is transported to another country?  Have you worked in an organization that has experienced downsizing? If so, how did the downsizing affect organizational structures and employees? Share a few examples.  Write and answer your own question about a topic discussed in this module. Module 7: Organizational Culture and Diversity If the World Were 100 People There are many different types of diversity. They include age, gender, religion ethnicity, wealth, and education level. Thinking about your current workplace, is there much diversity? Now imagine an island that contains just 100 people. This island represents the diversity in our entire world. What would that look like? Watch this video to find out. (And if you're curious where the makers of this video came up with their statistics, you can find out on the GOOD Data website.) Diversity & Innovation Sometimes when people are different, they have difficulties working together. Other times, these differences help them to make their team more innovative. Watch the video below by management consultant Rocío Lorenzo to see why she thinks that diversity can help drive innovation. All That We Share Whether it's at work, in the community, at school, or even in our own extended families, the tendency is to look at people as though they all fit in neat little boxes. But what happens when we start conversations that help us to learn more about each other and what we have in common? TV2, a Danish television station, created a three-minute video to help explore this idea. (Have a tissue handy. You might need one. I know I did.) Sparking and Sustaining Change Nancy Duarte and Patti Sanchez, authors of the book Illuminate: Ignite Change Through Speeches, Stories, Ceremonies, and Symbols, share their thoughts on how to effect change in organizations in this webinar recording. The key: communication. Nancy Duarte adds more to the topic of change in organizations in her slidedoc "Five Warning Story Plots Every Leader Needs to Know." She discusses ten story plots: five are warning, the other five are motivating. Which of these ten would work best in your workplace? Learning Journal In your Learning Journal, reflect on at least three of the questions or topics below  Thinking about If the World Were 100 People what surprised you the most?  In "How diversity makes teams more innovative", Rocío Lorenzo discusses why she thinks that diversity can help drive innovation. What are some of these ways? Would they work if implemented in your workplace? Why or why not?  After watching "TV 2 | All That We Share", what were your immediate reactions?  Nancy Duarte and Patti Sanchez share their thoughts on why communication is key to "Sparking and Sustaining Change". Thinking about a change you've experienced in your workplace, describe how well it was communicated and what the reactions of the employees were. Was the change successful?  Keeping "Five Warning Story Plots Every Leader Needs to Know" in mind, consider the ten story plots: five are warning, the other five are motivating. Which two or three of these ten would work best in your workplace? Why?  Write and answer your

If you have participat
ed in leadership development programs, how effective did you find them in (a) teaching you techniques and (b) giving you practical strategies you could use? What could they do better?
I have participated in a leadership development program in the previous organization in which I have worked. It was a workshop and a development program conducted by the management team of the organization. I found the session very comprehensive and insightful. The teaching techniques and the material that was delivered were extraordinary and provided effective tools and structures.
The training methods were professional, stimulating challenging, and provided enough scope for learning. It was extremely what while and it was effective enough to link with the academic and professional aspects of management. The training was excellent and was communicated in a personal manner that helps to solve many queries and effectively helped me to develop strategically enhanced perceptions for a career in management (Clark, 2015).
According to the Leadership Self-Assessment Questionnaire, what kind of leader are you. Do you agree or disagree with your assessment? Why?
According to the leadership self-assessment questionnaire, I scored 4 in the people section and scored 6 in the task section. The leadership graph shows that this point falls in the quadrant of the authoritarian section.
I do agree with the results and consider myself an authoritarian leader. It is evident that I am a task-oriented person and want my teammates to work harder. I generally do not discuss with my team members before making a decision. I am very strong on schedules and expect team members to do what they are told without any question or debate because I think that discussions or democracy in a team will make the decision-making process slower. I prefer high tasks and low relationships in the organization.
Watch Stanley McChrystal's video where he discusses his thoughts on the relationship between listening and leading. How important do you believe listening is to be an effective leader? Why?
Listening is an effective communication skill. And communication skills are fundamental for effective leadership. Leadership listening is an important skill because it makes the person responsible who can understand and hear people to built rapport and demonstrate that a leader cares about the team members. Listening is considered to be the reciprocal communication skill and leaders with good listening skill increases influence and improve relationship at work. A good leader with effective listening skills can be built a broader sense of trust and community. This is perhaps the most valuable leadership skill which upholds the fact that the leaders value the members of the team (Sinek, 2009). If a leader is a good listener then it broadens the perspective and helps the person to accumulate important information and reduce misunderstandings in the team.
Take the 60-question assessment to learn more about your personality. What are your reactions to the results of this assessment?
According to the 60 question assessment the big five personality traits are classified as openness, conscientiousness, extraversion/ introversion, agreeableness, and natural reactions (Psychology Sketchbook, 2016). I scored 90% in openness, 89 % in conscientiousness, 87.5% in extroversion, 80% in agreeableness, and 19% in neuroticism or natural reactions. I am quite overwhelmed to see such results. I was quite shocked because earlier I have never figured that I am an open person. In terms of agreeableness, I never thought of getting such a huge score. In terms of extraversion results, I am quite satisfied since I try to do my best in every activity. But the low score of neuroticism is indeed evident that I experience fewer negative emotions than the...
