Paragraph Writing: Summative (15%) 3 Your Task: Demonstrate the learning that you have accomplished through Weeks 1-6 in COMM1085 by writing two fully developed paragraphs in response to the following prompts. Below you will see 4 questions / prompts each related to the readings and topics that we have explored previously. Choose the two questions that you feel most confident and knowledgeable about. You can delete the questions that you don’t answer or leave them blank, as you prefer. Write your responses in the text boxes provided. The boxes will expand if you want to write more than the space provided. Use “Save As” to give the file a new name after you begin to ensure that you do not accidentally submit the blank template for grading. 1. Personal Identity In “Dear Dad” and “Food for Thought,” we heard from people who explored the history and culture of their heritage through travel and food. Both authors wrote about their journey to understand who they are and where they came from. Each discovered their identities were shaped by multiple influences. What influences shape your identity? Explain and support your answer with at least one reference to a text mentioned above, in addition to personal examples. 2. Indigeneity and Education in Canada In “Go Beyond the Equity Handbook” and “Niisaachawen Never Had a Library,” we learned about the educational experiences of Indigenous people in Canada: Riley Yesno told us about the exclusion she felt as student of a Canadian post-secondary institution, while Shelby Lisk introduced us to women working to create libraries for children living in First Nations communities. Both texts suggested that Indigenous peoples in Canada face significant obstacles to accessing education. What policies would you change or create to improve access to education for Indigenous peoples in Canada, and why is it important to do so? Explain and support your answer with at least one reference to a text mentioned above, in addition to your own ideas. 3. Social Media Trends: In “Indecent Proposals” and “Bringing Civility to Social Media, One Tweet at a Time,” we heard the concerns of people who worried that social media was changing – and potentially harming – important aspects of society. They painted a picture of an online world where people spoke harshly to each other and chased fame at the expense of their privacy. What does the future of social media look like to you, and how do you feel about it? Explain and support your answer with at least one reference to a text mentioned above, in addition to your own ideas. 4. Remote Learning: In “Hammering Without a Nail” and “Learning to Learn from a Distance,” we considered the potential advantages and disadvantages of remote learning, as well as the many ways that post-secondary programs are adapting to these new circumstances. How do you think this kind of learning experience will affect students’ future performance in the workplace? You may focus on either advantages or disadvantages of this learning environment, or you may attempt to consider both. Explain and support your answer with at least one reference to a text mentioned above, in addition to your own ideas. Portfolio Task #3: Integrating Quotations (5%) Your Task: Demonstrate your ability to quote relevant passages of text, to integrate those text references in your own sentence, and to correctly cite and document those text references. The questions in this task get progressively more challenging. The first question provides supporting information that you can use in your answer, and the following questions gradually remove this supporting information. Use “Save As” to give the file a new name after you begin to ensure that you do not accidentally submit the blank template for grading. 1. Why does Paikin try to avoid responding to twitter critics? To answer this question, quote and cite a select portion of this highlighted passage from paragraph 9. But, being in journalism, I do have a bit of affection for accuracy. So, at the very least, I wanted to correct his inaccurate assumption that I lived in Rosedale. I don’t. And as to showing off my backyard? Well, look at the shot. Do you see any backyard in that shot? You see a bird and some tree branch. That’s it. Then I had to grapple with the bigger question: Do I respond to this and, if so, how? I’m acutely aware of the maxim “Don’t feed the trolls.” It’s a bit like wrestling in the mud with a pig.  You both get dirty, but the pig enjoys it.  Write your answer in the empty box below, using the “standard citation” style. Use the following template as a guide: Public figures should not respond to critics on twitter because “quotation” (citation). Remember that you can select a portion of this passage to best fit the purpose and construction of your sentence. 2. How does Paikin describe his original tweet? To answer this question, quote and cite a select portion of this highlighted passage from paragraph 5. It was meant to be a harmless tweet that might encourage others to do the same or to make some humorous comments. Charles Pascal, a professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and a fellow baseball fan, tweeted, “Hey, it’s Stan Musial!” referring to the legendary Hall of Famer from the St. Louis Cardinals. Others, knowing my devotion to the Boston Red Sox (I’ve been a fan of that team since before the Blue Jays were born), saw some cute karma in a cardinal haunting my place. (I had to remind those folks that the Red Sox bested the Cardinals twice in World Series play this century, in 2004 and 2013.) Others sent pictures of blue jays in their backyards and, again, frivolity ensued. Write your answer in the empty box below, using the “split citation” style. Use the following template as a guide: Author’s last name (citation) signal / integrating phrase “quotation” (citation). Remember that you can quote a select portion of the highlighted passage to better fit the purpose and construction of your sentence. 3. How is the second twitter exchange between Paikin and Bryon different than the first? Quote and cite the highlighted passage from paragraph 24 using the standard citation style. I didn’t much like where Bryon’s and my interaction on social media started, but I love where it ended. It started with hurt and misunderstanding, but it ended with empathy and warm wishes both ways. Write your answer in the empty box below. Remember that you can select a portion of this passage to best fit the purpose and construction of your sentence. 4. What does Paikin hope to achieve by sharing this story publicly? Quote and cite a relevant passage from paragraph 25, seen below, using the split citation style. I’m not pretending that, in a sea of toxicity, one set of tweets will do much of anything to clean up the stench that passes for dialogue on Twitter (especially from you-know-who). But, if the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, then I’m happy to have taken that first step with Bryon. I hope our example, in this one small case, will encourage others to pause and consider whether it’s so important to try to bash someone’s face in on social media, rather than contribute to a more civilized world. Remember that you can quote a select portion of any sentence from the source text to best fit the purpose and construction of your own sentence. 5. Provide a reference for the text quoted in this exercise, using the assigned academic style guide. Place your reference in the empty box below, in the appropriate location. Some features of a real reference page have already been included, and the necessary spacing and formatting requirements have also been selected. Reference 1 2
