The activist investors are those individual or group who purchase a large portion of share in a company to gain power in the board of the company
. Generally when the activist is not much satisfied with the way the company is managed he does so.
Jeff Uben, is one of the prominent activist investor. He founded his company, Value Act capital Partners in 2000 at San Francisco, California, US. The company manages almost $16 billion on behalf of its clients including institutions and individual investors. The company is basically a privately owned hedge fund and provides such services to high net worth clients. The company provides advice to Rolls Royce, Microsoft. It had been major stakeholder in Adobe Systems but later sold most of the shares to the company when the price soared to 203%. It also invested in ValueAct and acquired board seats there but the company later crashed. Currently the company has huge investment in Microsoft. Holding high shares obviously mean controlling the company by being in the board of the company and taking important decisions, so in way it is beneficial for the other shareholders but the executives as well as non executive might not like too much interference.
