Question: Explain why ionic compound are formed when a metal from the left side of the
periodic ta
ble reacts with a nonmetal from the right side. Give two examples of such compound.
Solution:
The cause of chemical combination is the tendency of the atoms to complete their octet or duplet
(in case of elements having only K-shell).
Metals are on the left side of the Periodic Table. Metal atoms have 1, 2 or 3 electrons in their
valance shell, also they are strongly electropositive (have lower ionization enthalpy), which
means they can readily lose electrons. On the other hand Non-metals are on the right side of the
Periodic Table. Non metal atoms generally have 5, 6 or 7 electrons in their outermost shell, they
are strongly electronegative, which means they can readily accept 3, 2 or 1 electron to acquire
stable configuration.
Thus the electrons lost by metal atoms are gained by non-metals. Metals on losing electron (s)...
