1. Ways to Use Incubation for Generating New Ideas
Incubation is that part of creativity, which is practiced by diverting the conscious mind from the main task. As per the studies conducted in laboratory under controlled circumstances, it was found that when a person is working unconsciously they are able to generate more ideas. When the brain is ideal, it thinks about problems and try to relate with the familiar concepts (Eckinger & Sanders, 2019). Hence, in order to solve a problem and come up with new and innovative solutions it is essential to take breaks in between brain storming sessions. The break can range between 1-20 minutes. One can apply this concept for longer span of time over an individual.
By the following ways, the incubation can be used to generate new ideas:
· Firstly, one should spend some time to find the solutions of the problem- It can be right or wrong, or it can be diverse set of solutions.
· When they feel no more ideas striking their mind, they can take a break. During break, they can engage themselves in undemanding or routine task. This task should not be related to the problem they are working on.
· After the break, again they can go back to problem and start generating ideas. Remember incubation is only part of creative solving process.
2. Suitable Situation to Apply Delphi Method
Delphi method is a systematic method, which is used to achieve group opinions, decisions or forecasts given by a panel of experts independently. It is a consensus technique, in which several rounds are conducted. The summary of the answers is handed over to experts and finally they agree or disagree with the expert’s answers. Initially the Delphi method was used in science and technology (Sari and Wardhani, 2020). However, later the usage was expanded to education, public policy, business decisions, economics and healthcare. This method is recommended when the subjective statements are made on collective basis, when face-to face meetings are not possible and when experts preferred to remain anonymous.
3. Organizational Benefits of Innovation
Innovation for an organization brings new opportunities such as birth of new processes, products, strategies, technology and service. Innovation means exchanging of new ideas, which are later converted into tangible assets. This exchange can be in between departments, cross-functional teams, between organization and stakeholders. It leads to following benefits:
· The only solution to bring ideas on the surface is to discuss them more often. Staying quiet and not participating will lead to stagnation, which will create monotonous routines.
· Failures are not the end of the road. When traditional culture is replaced by innovative culture, it gives speed to the organization (McCann, 2020).
· Innovation fuels up learning and collaboration process. The interpersonal relationships improves, support functions develops and growth in ensured.
· During blurry days, it is a ray of hope. It will give new life to organization when innovation is only constant thing left in environment. It helps to develop product, which are ne and create new demand for them.
· The employee empowerment is rightly followed, as ideas are welcome. They are rewarded for creating workable models. It gives them sense of belongingness and they find themselves responsible towards achieving organizational goals (Kucharska, 2021).
· The common vision is shared and attached to individual’s goals. The understanding and implementing change process is easy now and leveraging on technology can be done confidently.
· Creativity get its crown and reign the organization. It is as if looking unconsciously for something new every time. The permeation of innovation in organizational spirit spread vertically and horizontally.
· The bureaucratic traditional system is replaced by innovative culture. It helps to promote a culture, which challenges conventions and old practices.
· Above all, it helps to improve the customer relationships, ensure employee engagement, innovative workplace practices, increase brand value, attracting and retaining next talent in the industry and elevate market position of the company in the competitive scenario (Lear, 2018).
4. Contribution of New Venture Teams to Innovative Thinking
Venture Teams:
These are unique teams, which are created separately in the organization to foster innovation in various aspects. They identify the areas, which can be introduced to innovation, develop and initiate the innovation process. In these teams, employees are empowered to follow their creativity as they enjoy different set of facilities and organizational rules. Their structure is relatively small and organic (O’Reilly and Binns, 2019). They reflect characteristics as that of a creative person. In order to use venture teams it is important to allocate dedicated funds for them. For example, a company name Teleflex allocated 0.5 percent of sales to venture fund so that new ideas can be explored.
A Reason:
It is important to have a reason for innovation. The need should be recognized then only the efforts can be directed into the right direction. Give employees a reason to innovate. They should look for new ways even to do routine work innovatively.
Consistent Stress on Innovation:
To foster innovative thinking there should be regular stress on the concept. It should be absorbed as company culture. When organization practice it, they are inseparable part of it and thus employees will think innovatively on regular basis (Chen and Zhang, 2021).
Brainstorming Sessions:
Although it is a strategy and regular practice too, yet these sessions proved to be successful in generating new ideas. In advertising agencies, these sessions help in creation of new advertisements, which make a mark on customer and they buy a product. Similarly, employees can also create ideas with time.
Support Ideas:
No matter how abstract the idea is, make sure as a team it is always welcomed. After analyzing the idea, the employee can be coached to bring any other alternative for it if required. The pros and cons of the idea should be discussed in detail so that improvement can be suggested (Lahiri et al. 2019).
Interaction between Different Departments:
Remaining silo will not help in innovation. When two minds juggle between different discussions, share knowledge and opinions, it helps in igniting minds. The awareness is created and voluntarily infusion of innovation takes place. When problems are shared, some random solutions come out and when they are discussed, innovative solutions arise.
Reverse Mentoring:
A team of senior and juniors is created. They both are trained in new set of skills. They have their own strengths as senior members will have experience and expertise while junior members will have technological advantage and new practices to implement. When these two will combine, it can be observed that new ideas are bubbling between them (Barwinski et al. 2020).
Learning From Mistakes:
The mistakes are a way to improve learning. They teach a lesson, which is otherwise not possible to attain from any other source. Taking mistake as a case study a divergent problem is created. Now when incubation is initiated employees will come out with diverse solutions. Those solutions can be worked upon after assigning them priority to analyze which is suitable.
Feedback:
Taking and giving feedback is an art. Not everyone is comfortable with it. Constructive feedback is important as it helps to improve. No matter the employees are at which level in the organization, the feedback should be taken positively to enhance the practices (Kuhlman et al. 2017). It is in the perception that through it the way to achieve organizational objectives will be improved.
Action:
The innovative ideas should be put to action on immediate note. Lingering around with them will spoil the purpose.
Idea Box:
Keeping of idea box in the organization will help in collection of ideas. It is not known when an idea strikes a mind and it should be known that where to reach for it. The idea box will help to reach the ideas to the table for further discussion as quickly as possible.
