Introduction
The novel corona virus has brought many changes in the world. The wide spread of the highly infectious disease, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused many complete and partial lock-downs in the countries all over the globe. Along with this, there have come many bans, prohibitions and restrictions. This situation has affected the hospitality industry all everywhere in a large way.
The food and beverage industries including the restaurants in Saudi Arabia has even received a major setback. According to Siddiqui (2020), as the world is opening slowly, the restaurants at the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have many guidelines and rules to be followed. The human resource faces a challenge to keep the employees motivated. The current situation, the changes that have occurred and the related best practices for the human resources in its training and development program is discussed here.
i. Current state of Training and Development in Restaurants in Saudi Arabia
The complete hospitality sector is deeply affected by the infectious Covid-19 pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus, which continues to spread in the countries around the globe. A major series of lock downs were seen in all the countries which included travel bans both on national and international levels. The hospitality sector including the hotels and the restaurants has been directly affected by it.
As informed by Bakhsh, Khawandanah, Naaman and Alashmali (2020), the abrupt bans, quarantines, isolations as well as prohibitions on the people have caused a disruption to the operations of the restaurants. Besides, the unpredictable nature of the outbreak have resulted in the owners of the restaurants to consider if the situation can be classified as an event that would prevent operations and management of the restaurants. With the pandemic, still continuing as well as the food and beverage industry still recovering, it is difficult for them to operate smoothly.
Amidst several restrictions, which still persist, numerous restaurants have vanished without a trace due to the devastating effect of Covid-19. Those who have been able to fight and survive carry the burden of job losses, cost cutting including the salary of the employees. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, like all the other countries around the globe, has decided to open the doors of its hospitality sectors away from the strict prohibition imposed earlier.
This, along with the travel ban also being lifted slowly shows a positive trait of hope to the related work force including those working for hotel and restaurants. It is to be mentioned that the training and development aspects of the employees in the food and beverage industry have been affected immensely. The restaurant industry has seen a complete shutter down situations in the country.
